Saffron MD Benefits

Saffron MD is an eye health supplement manufactured and produced by Stop Aging Now, the same makers as LiverPure XTS and Collagen360. Saffron MD is designed to improve visual activity, filter light to prevent damage, and has research-backed ingredient dosages. We will go into further detail on the benefits of Saffron MD below.

Improves Visual Activity

Research shows that a specific extract of saffron, a well-known cooking spice, can help to improve vision as much as two lines on the infamous Snellen eye chart. This chart is the common vision test you often read letters from at your eye doctor.

Filters UV and Blue Light to Prevent Macular Damage

The macula is the oval-shaped area in the center back part of the eye responsible for the color and fine details of our vision. Damage can often happen from artificial or UV lights due to the sensitivity of these cells; however, the saffron extract has protective mechanisms on the macula.

Ingredient Dosages that Research Supports

Research shows 20 mg of saffron extract, 10 mg of lutein, and 2 mg of zeaxanthin are enough to have a beneficial effect on visual performance in just 90 days, which can all be received with just one capsule per day.

Saffron MD Ingredients

Saffron MD’s formula includes the three main ingredients of Saffron Extract, Lutein, and Zeaxanthin. It also includes other ingredients as well, all of which we will further detail below.

saffron md supplement facts

Saffron Extract

Saffron is a powerful and flavorful spice for cooking, but is also full of antioxidants to protect from oxidative stress in the cells. Research shows 20mg of saffron daily can help improve retinal function and visual.

Lutein

Lutein is a carotenoid, which is the yellowish, orange pigment found in plants that can help protect from chronic disease. This is beneficial for eye health as it helps to form a colorful layer of pigment to absorb the extra harmful lights that can cause damage to the macula.

Zeaxanthin

Zeaxanthin is another natural carotenoid found in the body. It acts by scavenging the damaging free radicals and gives your eyes the extra nutrients it needs, especially when combined with lutein.

Other ingredients

The other ingredients included are microcrystalline cellulose, vegetable cellulose, vegetable magnesium stearate, and silica.

Does Saffron MD Work?

The clinical research to support the effectiveness of saffron extract, lutein, and zeaxanthin is evident in the literature linked on Saffron MD’s website. After 90 days of supplementation, results show improvement on the eye chart by two lines in addition to better response to light and increased retinal function.

However, not all customer reviews attest to this claim. Negative reviews may be due to multiple reasons, but the main one could be related to the stage of macular degeneration. Saffron is studied to be beneficial in the early stages. If a person is well past the early stages of degeneration, it may be harder to notice improvements in eye health compared to others.

Claims vs. Reality

Saffron MD claims to slow down macular degeneration. This can be extremely helpful, considering long-term degeneration may lead to blindness. This formula contains the proper antioxidants to protect the eye from damage, like sunlight. While these claims are evident, it is important to note that there are other factors to help make the ingredients in this product more active. For example, since lutein and zeaxanthin are both fat-soluble nutrients, they are best absorbed when taken with a high-fat meal.

In addition, saffron is one of the most expensive spices to purchase for culinary purposes. When looking at a reasonably priced supplement containing saffron extract, quality and sourcing for this ingredient should be considered. While their website doesn’t list specific information about where they source their ingredients, they do mention that Saffron MD is guaranteed to be safe and effective. They guarantee it is made in a facility that is inspected by the FDA and meets the Good Manufacturing Practices Guidelines.

Who is Saffron MD Eye Health Support Best For?

Saffron MD Eye Health is best for those who have poor eye health and are looking for a fairly priced supplement to add to their routine.

This product is great for those looking for at-home remedies before resorting to expensive procedures from the eye doctor. Saffron is studied to help to reduce the probability of having cataract surgery, making it worth trying before resorting to other options.

How Does Saffron MD Compare?

After reviewing and comparing other products on the market, the ingredients in Saffron MD Eye Health Support contain the correct dosages according to the research. However, some of these similar products for eye health, like Saffron 2020 – XP Eye Supplement, contain these same ingredients, but also contain other ingredients, like Zinc and Vitamin C. These additions can be beneficial because they are studied to show improvements for those with macular degeneration. It is important to note that these same nutrients can also be consumed via diet or other supplements.

Is Saffron MD Safe?

When looking at supplements, it is extremely important to break down the “others” listed at the bottom of supplement labels to see any hidden additions.

Microcrystalline cellulose is used for texture as an anti-caking agent. This may be a harmful ingredient for those with allergy issues.

Vegetable cellulose makes up the consistency of the capsule and is made of insoluble fiber. There should be no implications with this ingredient unless someone has an issue with fiber digestion.

Vegetable magnesium stearate is a salt that is a long-chain saturated fat commonly seen in meat, dairy, and oils. It is used to keep vitamins or medications together and is what gives that “sticky” coating. This may cause a laxative type effect if consumed in large amounts.

Silica is a common mineral found in supplements made up of silicon and oxygen and is found in most rocks on Earth or naturally in plants. Silica serves the purpose of an anti-caking agent in supplements to avoid ingredients sticking together. The FDA recognizes this product as generally safe in food or supplements, but may be harmful to the lungs if constantly inhaled.
