Naked Pea Protein Review

Naked Pea Protein is an alternative to whey protein powder for vegans, vegetarians, or those who may be sensitive to dairy. Like the name “Naked” suggests, there are no artificial or filler ingredients – only what you need and nothing more. Naked Pea Protein only has one ingredient. You can probably guess what it is.

That’s right… pea… protein.

If you’re debating buying this pea protein powder, you probably want to know how it compares to traditional whey protein powder to ensure you can still expect the same results and benefits.

So, let’s dive into this Naked Pea Protein review to see what this protein powder offers and how it stacks up against other powders on the market!

Naked Pea Protein Benefits

Naked Pea Protein is a protein powder manufactured and produced by Naked Nutrition. This supplement company aims to formulate top-quality products to meet a variety of needs have created quite an extensive line of products (many of which we have previously reviewed).

In addition to Naked Pea Protein, Naked Nutrition has also produced the following:

Naked Pea Protein offers similar benefits to whey protein supplements. On their website, Naked references whey multiple times when explaining their pea protein benefits. That is because whey has become the gold standard for protein powder, and while Naked Nutrition does offer its own Naked Whey powder, they want people to know that their pea protein can provide the same benefits to those who need a non-dairy alternative.

The main goal of any protein powder is to increase protein uptake, and the benefits of doing so would be increased muscle mass and weight loss. Building lean muscle helps to accelerate fat burning, and consuming more protein helps with satiety which can also assist in weight loss.

Naked Pea Protein - Increase Muscle Mass

A unique benefit to Naked Pea Protein is that it provides all the benefits of whey – muscle gain and weight loss – while fitting into a plant-based diet. Some people have sensitivities and trouble digesting dairy, and in those situations, pea protein could be a helpful alternative as well.

If you consume a plant-based diet, such as a vegan or vegetarian diet, it can be tough to get ample amounts of protein, especially if you are trying to gain muscle. Most of the “high protein” plant food options contain more carbohydrates than they do protein – beans, legumes, and quinoa, to name a few.

Naked Pea protein is an effective way to increase your protein intake on a plant-based diet without adding unwanted carbohydrates.

Naked Pea Protein Ingredients

There is only one ingredient in Naked Pea Protein: Yellow Pea Protein.

As mentioned before, Naked Nutrition lives up to its brand name. The fact that they do not fill up their products with unnecessary ingredients is something to be appreciated.

A pea protein isolate is used in this supplement. This means the protein-rich component of the yellow pea is isolated, and most of the carbohydrates and fiber that are present in the whole food do not make it into the supplement. Each serving of Naked Pea Protein contains 27 grams of protein, 2 grams of carbs, and 0.5 grams of fat.

Does Naked Pea Protein Work?

Naked Pea Protein provides everything you need to promote lean muscle mass and strength gain. In fact, there have been studies like this that show plant proteins to be just as effective as animal-based proteins when it comes to improving musculoskeletal health.

Like all protein supplements, plant-based protein supplements are not magic powders. If your goal is to build muscle or lose weight, then there are many other factors involved. Exercise type, consistency, and nutrition will move the needle the most.

A supplement like Naked Pea Protein can help you reach a higher protein intake and, in combination with your training and diet, can assist you in reaching your goal faster.

Who is Naked Pea Protein Best For?

Naked Pea Protein is best for anyone who wants to increase their protein intake but needs an alternative to whey. Those following a plant-based diet or sensitivities to dairy should consider pea protein as an alternative. It can also be for those who just want a more cost-effective option over whey or prefer a plant protein to reduce their carbon footprint and be environmentally conscious.

Naked Pea Protein Best For

Naked Pea Protein vs. Whey Protein

While it’s nothing too drastic, there are still some notable differences between pea protein and whey protein.

Amino Acid Profile

Amino acids are considered the “building blocks” of muscle. There are 20 amino acids that are responsible for making proteins in the body. Nine of these are considered essential amino acids because our bodies are not capable of making them on their own.

Whey protein contains all nine of these essential acids in sufficient quantities. Pea protein technically provides all nine but has low levels of methionine. To get enough of this amino acid, you’d need to supplement elsewhere in your diet. Eggs and meats have the highest amount. However, if your goal is plant-based, then those may not be an option. Seeds and grains also have methionine, albeit in lesser amounts than animal products.

From this perspective, whey protein powders, such as High Impact Whey Protein and The Protein Works Whey Protein 80, can be superior to a plant protein like Naked Pea Protein when it comes to providing a complete amino acid profile.

Other Notable Differences

Here are some other differences between whey and pea protein that are worth mentioning:

  • Whey protein has been shown to help regulate blood sugars better than other types of proteins
  • Whey protein is more bioavailable than plant protein. This means that you can absorb and use more of what you consume.
  • Pea protein contains significantly more iron than whey protein and 20% of the recommended daily value.
  • Pea protein may utilize fewer resources than animal-based protein, making it the more environmentally friendly choice.

Is Naked Pea Protein Safe?

Since Naked Pea Protein only has one ingredient, which is derived from peas, there is not much to worry about in terms of safety. Like any protein supplement, digestive upset is the most common side effect.

A plant-based protein should cause less stomach upset than a dairy-based protein like whey or casein. However, it always comes down to individual trial and error to find a supplement that works best for you.

Final Review: Naked Pea Protein

Does Naked Pea Protein taste good?

Naked Pea Protein comes unflavored, as well as in chocolate and vanilla. Pea proteins generally tend to be a bit grainier compared to the smoother whey protein. You may choose to mix the unflavored version in a smoothie to add some flavor, and then the texture wouldn’t be a problem.

Even if you did grab the chocolate or vanilla version, Naked is all about keeping it simple. They only contain a bit of coconut sugar to sweeten the formula. So, if you’re looking for a “double chocolate sundae surprise,” you won’t get that here. But if you appreciate clean ingredients and don’t have a strong sweet tooth, then it may be just right.

How is the ingredient quality in Naked Pea Protein?

Naked Nutrition always does a great job sourcing high-quality ingredients for its supplements. First, it’s only one ingredient – pea protein. If you grab a flavored version, you’ll have a small amount of organic coconut sugar in the mix, along with raw organic cocoa or natural vanilla flavoring.

Naked Pea Protein is also certified gluten-free, GMO-free, and soy-free. It is produced from yellow split peas grown exclusively in the US and Canada to ensure the highest quality possible.

Does Naked Pea protein have the right ingredient dosages?

There’s really nothing more you could ask for when it comes to the ingredients in this formula. If you are looking for a protein shake, you want protein – and that’s about it. Each serving of Naked Pea Protein contains 27 grams of protein, only 2 grams of carbs, and .5 grams of fat.

More than 30 grams of protein at a time may provide diminishing returns, and most protein supplements are right around 25 grams per serving.

Is Naked Nutrition trustworthy?

Naked Nutrition products undergo third-party testing for heavy metals and purity of ingredients. Most of their supplements are certified through informed-choice.org. They also have a ton of genuine client reviews which are mainly positive.

How does Naked Pea Protein compare to alternatives?

A search for “pea protein” will load many options. The great thing about Naked’s simple formulas is that they are usually the cleanest, with the least ingredients of the bunch. The thing about pea protein is most other versions of pea protein are extremely similar. That’s because people who want pea protein and eat a plant-based diet are usually health conscious and don’t want many additional ingredients in their products.

As far as a comparison goes, the top Pea Protein powder brands are all almost identical when it comes to ingredients, nutritional facts, servings per container, etc. But there is one significant variable that differs across the options available… price.

Is Naked Pea Protein a good value?

Naked Pea Protein contains 76 servings per container at $57.99. Compared to whey protein powder, this is pretty cheap! However, pea protein seems just a cheaper alternative to whey in general.

I would say that Naked Pea Protein has excellent value, except there are other very similar pea proteins available at a lower price online. Not just a little cheaper either, but sometimes $10 or even $20 more affordable for the same number of servings.

These brands make similar claims in quality and contain similar ingredients and dosage. Naked Nutrition does do more quality testing than cheaper brands. All in all, Naked Nutrition has a solid reputation, and people may be willing to pay additional for the name and the trust they have in the brand.

Is Naked Pea Protein worth using?

Naked Pea Protein gets a great overall rating because it is a great product. It has everything you need in a protein supplement and nothing you don’t. Naked uses the highest quality ingredients, and you can trust them because of their third-party testing and good reputation in the health and fitness space.

For this particular supplement, other similar options are more cost-effective, which would be the biggest reason to give another pea protein a try. At the end of the day, though, if you decide to go with Naked Pea Protein – you won’t be wrong.
