About Eyetamins

Eyetamins is not a single supplement but rather a company that has a group of different eye supplements depending on your needs. On their website, you are asked to take a quiz, and you’re then directed to a specific science-backed natural formula to support your individual vision and eye health needs. The four different products they have are:

The first two are self-explanatory in what they’re designed for. As for Nurtureyes, it is specifically designed to protect your eyes from digital eye strain.

All of the product formulas are developed by Dr. Kaushal Kulkarni, a practicing board-certified neuro-ophthalmologist who has treated thousands of people suffering from eye diseases.

Eyetamins Benefits

The specific benefits of Eyetamins depends on the formula, but below is what each product is advertised to do:

  • Dry Eye Comfort- Designed to help moisturize the eyes and even improve dry skin and mouth
  • Vision Support- Advertised to preserve and promote visual health, strengthen the macula, and even promote brain health while supporting sleep and focus
  • Nurtureyes- Designed to filter blue light, and ease eye strain, while also promoting sleep, focus, and visual health.
  • Nurtureyes for Kids- Advertised to filter blue light, and shield eyes, while also supporting visual and cognitive development and promoting sleep and focus.

These benefits are attributed to their clinically-studied, natural ingredients, such as vitamins C and E, bilberry, lutein, zeaxanthin, zinc, and sea buckthorn, among others.

But is this line of Eyevitamins products really the next best thing for visual health? Let’s examine.

Eyetamins Ingredients

The ingredients are different for each Eyetamins formula, but there is some overlap with some of the ingredients. Below is what’s in each Eyetamins product:

  • Dry Eye Comfort:  Organic Sea Buckthorn Fruit Oil, Organic Sea Buckthorn Seed Oil
  • Vision Support: Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Zinc, Neurofactor Coffee Fruit Extract, European Bilberry Extract 4:1, Saffron Extract 4:1, Lutein from Lutemax 2020 Marigold Flower Extract, Astaxanthin]
  • Nurtureyes: Lutein, Zeaxanthin, both from Lutemax 2020 Marigold Flower Extract
  • Nurtureyes for Kids: Lutein, Zeaxanthin, both from Lutemax 2020 Marigold Flower Extract

Dry Eye Comfort

The Dry Eye Comfort formula from Eyetamins contains oil from both the fruit and seed of organic sea buckthorn. Sea buckthorn is rich in numerous bioactive compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Plus, sea buckthorn is rich in omega-3, 6,7, and 9 fatty acids.

One study found that supplementing with sea buckthorn oil improved tear film osmolarity and led to a decrease in dry eye symptoms. And this is supported by other research, which generally shows that both sea buckthorn fruit and seed can alleviate dry eye symptoms.

Recommended dose is 1,000 to 2,000mg total.

Vision Support

The Vision Support formula contains the most ingredients by far, so we will break this down into subsections.

Vitamins C and  E: Both vitamins C and E are critical antioxidants known for fighting off oxidative stress and free radical damage, which can protect against eye damage. However, research is inconclusive as to whether or not supplementation is truly necessary to prevent vision loss and other eye problems.

Zinc: Also included is zinc, which is a trace mineral that also has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of its own. Plus, zinc is found in high concentrations in the retina and other parts of the eye. While research isn’t fully definitive, it seems that zinc supplementation may help reduce age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and other vision problems.

Neurofactor: Neurofactor is a trademarked form of coffee fruit extract. It has been shown to increase brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) by nearly 150%, suggesting its benefits for overall brain health and function.

Bilberry: Bilberry is rich in anthocyanins and other antioxidant-like compounds. Research shows that bilberry supplementation can improve night vision, reduce eye fatigue, and decrease macular degeneration.

Saffron: Like bilberry, saffron is rich in bioactive compounds, such as crocin and crocetin, which can reduce oxidative stress and inflammation in the retina and other parts of the eye. Research shows saffron has promising benefits for AMD, various retinal diseases, and glaucoma, among other eye diseases.

Lutein: Also included is lutein, which is a carotenoid compound. They specifically got this from the trademarked Lutemax 2020 Marigold Flower Extract. Lutein from this compound has been shown to reduce and/or prevent AMD, cataract formation, retinal disease, and more, largely through its significant anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.

Recommended dose: 10mg

Astaxanthin: Astaxanthin is a carotenoid compound that also has potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Research also shows that it is beneficial for retinal diseases, ocular surface disorders, cataracts, and other eye diseases.

Nurtureyes and Nurtureyes for Kids (Same Ingredients, smaller dosages for latter)

eyetamins nurtureyes and nurtureyes for kids

The Nutureyes and Nutureyes Kids formulas contain the same ingredients, with the children’s version using smaller dosages. Below is what is included in both.

Lutein: See the above information

Zeaxanthin: The next ingredient to mention is zeaxanthin, yet another carotenoid compound. They took the form that comes from the trademarked Lutemax 2020 Marigold Flower Extract. It is very similar to lutein in its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions. It, like lutein, builds up in the macula, so it’s important for protecting against AMD. Other research shows it can reduce cataracts and other eye diseases.

Mesozeaxanthin: This formula also has mesozeaxanthin, which is derived from zeaxanthin. It also has been shown to strengthen the macula and improve overall vision and eye health.

Plus, the combination of lutein, zeaxanthin, and mesozeaxanthin has been shown to reduce headaches, eye strain, and eye fatigue, while improving visual performance and sleep quality in individuals with high screen time exposure.

Are the Eyetamins Formulas Effective?

All of the Eyetamins formulas seem to be effective for improving eye health. Every formula is loaded with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds known for having specific actions on the macula and other parts of the eye, thereby strengthening eye and visual health. Plus, sea buckthorn is rich in fatty acids known to alleviate dry eyes.

eyetamins formulas effectiveness

All of the ingredients are well-researched and proven to offer unique benefits. One downfall is that some of the formulas could include even more ingredients for optimal effectiveness. For example, the Vision Support formula has the most ingredients, but I don’t see any reason why bilberry, saffron, vitamin C, or other ingredients couldn’t be added to the Dry Eye Comfort or Nurtureyes formulas for even better results.

Regardless, research does back up the ingredients in these products, and you should experience the benefits that the makers claim for each formula.

Claims vs. Reality

Overall, the claims made by Eyetamins can be backed up.

The research on sea buckthorn is clear, showing it should improve dry eyes, so Dry Eye Comfort should improve your dry eyes.

And the many ingredients in Vision Support are known to decrease inflammation and oxidative stress and can benefit the retina, macula, and overall eye strength and health, all of which should improve vision.

And for both Nurtureyes formulas, it’s clear that this combination can reduce many symptoms associated with high screen time exposure, such as eye strain, headaches, and eye fatigue.

Of course, these benefits likely won’t occur overnight; they’ll take at least a couple of weeks to develop and probably a few months to reach maximal effectiveness in some cases.

Who is Eyetamins Best For?

Obviously, the exact Eyetamins formula that’s best for you depends on your situation.

Dry Eye Comfort is best for anyone who is just dealing with dry eyes but has no other significant eye or vision problems.

Vision Support is the most comprehensive formula and best for people with AMD or significant vision/eye health concerns. Older individuals likely will benefit the most from Vision Support.

Finally, Nurtureyes is best for anyone whose main issue is spending too much time on phones and computers and the issues that result from that. The makers say anyone 13 and up can take this formula. And Nurtureyes for Kids is a very similar formula, just with reduced dosages, so it’s best for children aged 4 to 12.
