Their claim to fame is their plant-based, gluten, soy, and dairy-free powder that comes in a variety of creative flavors, including salted caramel, vanilla chai, chocolate coconut, cinnamon churro, strawberry mylk, peanut butter cups, s’mores, cookie crunch, and banana bread.

EHP Labs makes Blessed Protein. Founded in 2012 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the Sports Supplement Brand EHP Labs has since created over 20 different health and fitness products that emphasize weight loss, physical performance, and recovery, including EHP Labs OxyShred, EHP Labs Crea-8, and EHP Labs OxyWhey.

In 2019 they released the Blessed line of vegan-friendly, plant-based supplements due to the increasing global interest in a plant-based, whole-food lifestyle.

Protein is made up of amino acids, nine of which are essential to forming a “complete” protein for our body to use. Many plant-based protein sources do not contain all nine essential amino acids. Pea protein, however, does, but it is low in the amino acid methionine. 

The good news is recent research has shown that you don’t have to consume complete proteins at every meal to get the benefit if you are consuming protein throughout the day. Pea protein has a more balanced amino acid profile than other non-soy, plant-based protein sources, such as grains and hemp seed.

Because it is a pea protein isolate, it contains more concentrated protein without the added carbs or fat versus a pea protein concentrate, with one scoop containing 23 grams of protein, 140 calories, 7 grams of carbs, 3 grams of fat, and 1-2 grams of fiber.

Does Blessed Protein Work?

To make muscle gains in the gym and fuel for proper recovery, research suggests you need to take in more protein than you are breaking down.

According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the current recommendation for protein intake is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight. For those who are strength training to build muscle, this should be increased to 1.2-1.7 grams per kilogram of body weight, according to the American College of Sports Medicine.

Although this increased protein need can be met with diet, many choose to consume a protein powder to add convenience to their routine. With whey protein being the gold standard and the most highly researched form for its benefits to those looking to increase bulk, it can be a hard one to beat.

According to a few small studies, pea protein powder has similar effects on muscle gains and recovery as whey protein powder; however, the studies are limited and small in sample size. Because pea protein isolate is considered a complete protein source and Blessed Protein powder contains a good amount of protein per scoop (23 grams), it can be a beneficial additive for those who need the extra protein boost.

Extensive research shows that additional protein is needed to progress with your fitness routine; therefore, for its kind, it will prove beneficial for those who need it.

How Does Blessed Protein Measure Up to Others?

When comparing Blessed Protein to similar products, such as Naked Nutrition’s Naked Pea Protein and My Vegan Pea Protein Isolate, Blessed Plant-Based Protein is at a significantly higher price point than the others. 

At $49.95, you can get a 2-pound container of Blessed Protein (about 30 servings). In contrast, you can purchase a 5-pound container (76 servings) of Naked Nutrition’s Naked Pea Protein for $54.99 or a 5.5-pound container (80 servings) of My Vegan Pea Protein Isolate for $59.99. 

My Vegan Pea Protein Isolate contains 21 grams of protein per serving compared to 23 grams from Blessed Plant-Based protein; however, it has only 100 calories per serving compared to 140 calories in Blessed and less than 1 gram of carbs. Naked Nutrition’s Naked Pea protein powder contains 120 calories per 2-scoops but has 27 grams of protein per serving and only 2 grams of carbs.

Blessed Plant-Based Protein powder contains high-quality ingredients; however, they are comparable to those in Naked Nutrition’s Naked Pea protein and My Vegan Pea Protein Isolate but at a significantly higher price point. However, Blessed Plant-Based Protein powder does have an extensive range of flavor options that the other brands do not have.

Those following a plant-based, vegan, gluten-free, or soy-free diet who are challenged by getting adequate protein while maintaining an active lifestyle may benefit from this supplement.

EHP Labs claims their Blessed Protein can help with lean muscle development and weight management in an all-natural form by assisting in recovery, increasing performance, and enhancing endurance. Although there are limited studies on the effects of pea protein isolate on muscle recovery and exercise performance, a few small studies have found it to provide similar benefits to whey protein. 

Although the research is lacking for pea protein specifically, the available research on protein sources and their effects on muscle recovery and growth supports that pea protein isolate would likely benefit these areas. 

Blessed Protein Safety

According to their website, there are no known side effects reported from Blessed Protein as directed on the package. Research supports this claim as it comes from natural sources. However, there is a P65 warning on the product website regarding a potential lead and/or arsenic exposure from Blessed Protein.

It is encouraged for those who have underlying medication conditions to always speak with their healthcare professional before starting a supplement.

Final Verdict: Blessed Protein Review

Although the nutrition profile for Blessed Plant-Based Protein is impressive, one will obtain more nutrients, such as essential vitamins and minerals, from consuming whole food protein sources. Blessed Plant-Based Protein is also less budget-friendly than other protein powders on the market of its kind, which makes it unavailable for some consumers.

This product does have a large variety of fun flavors that give it a leg up from the competition; however, at its current price point, other options can provide the same benefit at a lower budget.
