Lectin Shield

Dr. Steven Gundry and Holobiotics

First, let us introduce the man behind Gundry MD, Dr. Steven Gundry. For more than thirty years, Dr. Gundry was one of the world’s pre-eminent experts in heart surgery. He graduated cum laude from Yale, with special honors in Human Biological and Social Evolution. Dr. Gundry was an Alpha Omega Alpha graduate of the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine and did his residency in General Surgery and Thoracic Surgery at the University of Michigan. He and his colleagues performed more infant and pediatric heart transplants than anyone else in the world. Dr. Gundry has operated in more than thirty countries, holds patents for some incredibly complex instruments used in heart surgery, and is the author of several New York Times best-selling books. His published works focus on nutrition and diet, including The Plant Paradox, and Dr. Gundry’s Diet Evolution.

Dr. Steven Gundry Founder Lectin Shield

The mission statement of Gundry MD is “To dramatically improve human health, happiness, and longevity through a unique vision of diet and nutrition.” Dr. Gundry’s philosophy, which he refers to as Holobiotics, is based on the belief that true health only happens when you’re living in a state of cooperation with the trillions of tiny microbes that live everywhere in, on, and around your body. The key to sustainable health is our beneficial microbes, which he refers to as our “gut buddies.”

To understand Holobiotics, first, people must know that their entire body is dominated by different kinds of microbes. Some of these microbes are good, while others are bad. Unfortunately, most people choose a diet and lifestyle that kills off their good bacteria and increases the growth and multiplication of harmful microbes. This loss of microbe balance eventually throws off the wellness balance of your whole body.

Holobiotics is the phrase Dr. Gundry created for the diet and lifestyle choices people must make to bring this microbe ratio back into balance to lose weight and improve their health.

Gundry MD markets a variety of supplements, skin and hair care products, foods, books, and the subject of this review Lectin Shield. In this article, we’ll review the Lectin Shield product formulation and its key ingredients. We’ll discuss the product’s features and benefits and investigate to determine if the product is meeting its marketing claims. We’ll inform you where you can find the product, review the cost-value relationship, and as always provide you our rating in terms of effectiveness and value.

The Case for Good Digestive Health

Your stomach, large intestine, and small intestine, together with your digestive system, are home to some 100 trillion bacteria. Many of these bacteria are responsible for digesting our food, regulating our hormones, eliminating toxins, and producing vital nutrients.  These beneficial bacteria in our gut represent some 80% of our immune cells, which protect us against colds, pathogens, viruses, and other “bugs.”

If you want to stay healthy, taking care of your gut health is paramount. When your immune system is compromised, you are at an increased risk for autoimmune diseases, colds, cases of flu, allergies, and a myriad of other conditions.

Other bacteria in your digestive tract are not so beneficial, things such as lectins (plant-based proteins that harm proper cell function); pathogens (bugs that cause illness and infection); and gut yeasts (which harm healthy digestion and help make you overweight).

What About Those Lectins?

Lectins are a family of proteins found in almost all foods, especially legumes, grains, beans, soybeans, and nuts. They’re considered an “anti-nutrient” because they inhibit the absorption of minerals, and possibly play a role in obesity and chronic inflammation. Some people claim that lectins cause increased gut permeability and drive autoimmune diseases.

This family of proteins, which serve to protect plant life in nature, bind to carbohydrates in the human digestion process and interfere with your digestion, energy, and overall health.

Lectin Shield capsules

Lectin Shield from Gundry MD

Lectin Shield is a dietary supplement in vegetable capsule form. The product contains a unique blend of potent compounds designed to help your body eliminate toxic proteins. All Gundry products are manufactured in the U.S. in a cGMP (Certified Good Manufacturing Practices) facility, always something we look for and recommend in supplements you may be considering.

What Does Lectin Shield Do?

Lectin Shield, with its nine ingredients, is positioned to promote regularity, reduce feelings of gas and bloating, and help to prevent food cravings. The addition of two specific ingredients, MSM and glucosamine, may also help to alleviate joint pain.

Lectin Shield Ingredients

Kudos to Gundry on identifying each of the nine ingredients in Lectin Shield on the Supplement Facts label. There are no proprietary blends, and each component indicates its precise dosage.

Surprisingly, there is no mention of what is not included in the product. There are no claims relating to Vegan, (although the capsule is a vegetable cap), non-GMO, organic, or artificial colorings, sweeteners, or preservatives. This is ironic, as for their Total Restore product Dr. Gundry states, “Total Restore contains only 100% natural and pure ingredients, it is sugar-free, artificial sweetener-free, lectin-free, soy-free, and dairy-free”. We could find no such comments related to Lectin Shield. That said, the ingredients are all-natural and high quality.

The key ingredients are as follows:

  • N Acetyl D-Glucosamine (300 mg) – a very popular ingredient in joint pain supplements, known to bind to wheat lectins
  • Bladderwrack (200 mg) – a type of seaweed that binds to dangerous, inflammatory lectins
  • D-Mannose (100 mg) – a natural compound that binds to specific lectins in legumes
  • Okra (Fruit) (100 mg) – another compound that binds to harmful lectins, also known for its antioxidant properties
  • Mucin (100 mg) – binds to multiple types of foods containing lectins. Helps to form a protective barrier in the digestive tract
  • Sodium Alginate (100 mg) – a “fecal bulking agent”
  • Vegetable Peptase (50 mg) – aids in protein digestion and counteracts the digestive effects of lectins
  • Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) (50 mg) – another popular ingredient in joint supplements, often used in combination with Glucosamine
  • Larch Arabinogalactans (50 mg) – nourishes the gut lining

As you can see, Dr. Gundry researched this formula extensively, including ingredients noted for their contributions to gut health and joint pain relief. He is an expert in diet and nutrition, and says of Lectin Shield, “this is the most significant medical innovation I’ve developed to date.”

Lectin Shield Supplement Facts

Benefits of Lectin Shield

In addition to the previously mentioned benefits of promoting regularity, reducing gas, bloating, and preventing food cravings, there are several other benefits:

  • Helps to prevent “Leaky Gut”
  • Forms a protective barrier in your GI tract
  • Supports your immune system
  • Help process protein for energy
  • Reduces appetite
  • Relieves joint discomfort

How to Take Lectin Shield

The company recommends you take 2 capsules, twice a day, with 2 of your largest meals. Note: With the standard size of Lectin Shield being 60 capsules, this equates to a 15-day supply at the recommended dosage.

Does Lectin Shield Work?

The website is replete with customer reviews extolling the extraordinary benefits of using Lectin Shield. There were, however, no clinical trials cited, or any other form of verifiable evidence as to the efficacy of the product on the Gundry website.

Based on the “binding” ingredients, we believe Lectin Shield should be effective in reducing bloating and gas, which are the main benefits cited. If this is your goal, Lectin Shield is absolutely worth a try.

Potential Side Effects

The website makes no mention of side effects. Since Gundry products are made with natural ingredients, they should be safe; however, people with shellfish allergies and those sensitive to excess iodine in their diet should not use the product.

The most common issues associated with Lectin Shield are abdominal distress, nausea, and cramps. These are not exclusive to this product. Any product that aims to improve gut health may lead to stomach issues, especially when you first start using it. That said, these side effects are generally mild and will not affect every user.

As with any new dietary supplement, we suggest you consult with your medical professional before using this product.

Lectin Shield Pricing

The Gundry website lists the price of Lectin Shield as $79.95 for a single bottle.

If you use the full recommended dosage, each bottle will last for 15 days. The most popular order is a 3-bottle bundle. This offers significant savings and allows customers to try out the product for long enough to determine whether or not it is a good fit.

If you’re hesitant, you can start with a single bottle and purchase a multi-pack at a later point.
