A good night’s sleep is something that nearly everyone, especially athletes, desires (or at least they should). Yet, for many, a solid restful night’s sleep can sometimes be elusive. Whether it’s a lack of total sleep time, impaired sleep quality, or both, the fact is that there are many athletes (and regular people, too) suffering from suboptimal sleep. Lifestyle changes should often be the first step to address these issues, but sleep supplements can also come in handy, just as long as the supplement is one with the right, high-quality ingredients.

One such sleep option that claims to provide the rest you may be looking for is called Momentous Elite Sleep. This sleep supplement is designed to help you fall asleep faster, stay asleep, and get the rest you’ve been searching for. The question is, can it really live up to the claims? In this Momentous Elite Sleep review, we’ll guide you through everything you need to know about this supplement to truly make the final call.

Ready to find out if Momentous Elite Sleep can help you get the sleep you deserve? Let’s dive in!

About Momentous Elite Sleep

Momentous Elite Sleep is made by Momentous, the same producers as Momentous Collagen Peptides. Elite Sleep is a sleep supplement designed specifically for athletes to help improve a number of aspects of their sleep, thereby improving performance and recovery.

Momentous states that Elite Sleep contains a unique blend of research-backed ingredients, from melatonin to l-theanine, all of which are designed to help athletes get their best sleep ever.

Momentous Elite Sleep Benefits

The primary advertised benefits of Momentous Elite Sleep are:

  • Reduction in the time it takes to fall asleep
  • Increased REM sleep
  • Decreased frequency and duration of nighttime awakenings
  • Reductions in anxiety and stress, along with increased calmness
  • Improved recovery

Fall Asleep Faster

Momentous Elite Sleep contains melatonin which is designed to help you fall asleep faster, based on its involvement in the circadian rhythm and sleep-wake cycles. Certain relaxants in Elite Sleep, such as l-theanine, also may help “shut the brain off” and get you to sleep quicker.

Better Sleep Quality

The inclusion of melatonin is also designed to increase sleep quality, such as by increasing REM sleep and decreasing nighttime awakenings. Elite Sleep also includes valerian and l-theanine, which may improve sleep quality by calming the mind.

Reduced Anxiety and Stress

As noted briefly above, valerian root and l-theanine are included to help decrease racing thoughts and decrease stress and anxiety. In turn, this should promote more refreshing, longer-lasting sleep.

Improved Recovery

Finally, they say that the inclusion of tart cherry will improve recovery by reducing inflammation and muscle damage. Better sleep, in general, could be another pathway toward improving recovery.

So, does Momentous Elite Sleep actually have elite status when it comes to sleep optimization? Let’s take a look!

Momentous Elite Sleep Ingredients

There are only a few ingredients in Momentous Elite Sleep, but they are some of the most well-known ingredients out there. Each serving (two capsules) contains the following ingredients:

  • Vitamin B6 (4mg)
  • Melatonin (3mg)
  • Tart Cherry Fruit Powder (CherryPURE) (200mg)
  • L-Theanine (200mg)
  • Valerian Root Extract (300mg)

Vitamin B6

The only vitamin included in Elite Sleep is vitamin B6, one of the B-complex vitamins. Vitamin B6 has a few roles related to sleep. For example, it is necessary for the production of serotonin, which ultimately is converted to melatonin in the presence of darkness. Serotonin itself is involved in mood and sleep too.

Deficiencies in vitamin B6 are related to insomnia, depression, and other mood disturbances, so supplementation could help correct any deficiencies and aid sleep. One study also found that vitamin B6 increased dream recall, which could be indicative of increased REM sleep. There isn’t really a standard dosage to use, but one review indicates that dosages well above the RDI may be necessary for improving various brain health issues, so effective supplements should usually include at least 100% of the RDI, or 1.3mg.

Melatonin

Up next is the ubiquitous sleep ingredient known as melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone produced naturally in the body and is the primary driver of the sleep cycle, with an influence on the overall circadian rhythm too. Without enough melatonin, it is almost guaranteed that your sleep will be impaired.

Fortunately, there is plentiful research indicating that melatonin supplementation is effective for various sleep disorders. Melatonin supplementation can decrease the time it takes to fall asleep; increase total sleep time; and improve overall sleep quality. Anywhere from 0.5mg to 10mg is beneficial (sometimes less is more in the case of melatonin). The amount of melatonin used within products found in the sleep supplement world can vary quite a bit; you’ll find options, like Dream EZ, that contain 5mg per serving, while others may contain the bare minimum, like Enhanced Athlete Sleep Juice with just 0.5mg. So, at 3mg per serving, the amount of melatonin within Momentous Elite Sleep is right in the middle of most options.

CherryPURE

The third ingredient in Elite Sleep is a patented form of tart cherry fruit powder called CherryPURE. Tart cherry juice is high in antioxidants and other health-boosting compounds, and research shows that it is able to reduce inflammation and muscle soreness from strenuous exercise, which ultimately leads to better recovery, strength, and endurance. Lastly, tart cherry juice contains melatonin, and some research shows it can improve total sleep time and sleep quality. Most of the research on CherryPURE uses 480mg per day.

L-Theanine

Elite Sleep also includes l-theanine, an amino acid found naturally in green tea leaves. It has a number of calming effects on the brain. For example, l-theanine can increase the production of alpha waves in the brain, and it also increases GABA levels, both of which are associated with calmness and relaxation.

Furthermore, l-theanine supplementation has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, including reductions in the stress hormone, cortisol. Overall, l-theanine is able to promote greater sleep quality, not via sedation but rather by reducing stress and anxiety. Effective doses are typically around 200 to 400mg per day.

Valerian Root

The final ingredient in Momentous Elite Sleep is valerian root extract. Valerian is an herb that has been used for thousands of years for various ailments, including insomnia. Similar to theanine, valerian is also proven to increase GABA and alpha brain wave production, which could promote anxiety and stress reduction.

Valerian supplementation also seems to increase serotonin and adenosine, which both have roles in supporting sleep and mood too. Overall, valerian is able to help promote better sleep by calming the mind and reducing stress and anxiety. When using the root extract, anywhere from 300mg to 3g appears to be effective.

Does Momentous Elite Sleep Work?

So, after analyzing the ingredients, I’m confident that Momentous Elite Sleep will be a high-quality sleep supplement. All of the ingredients are backed by solid and numerous research studies, which all show that they are effective in improving various aspects of sleep. Momentous Elite Sleep contains ingredients that optimize the sleep-wake cycle, reduce anxiety and stress, and provide key nutrients, all of which can benefit sleep.

elite sleep nighttime recovery

With this in mind, however, severe cases of anxiety and/or insomnia might not be fully treated by these ingredients, but it is likely effective for mild to moderate sleep disorders.

Another limitation is that Momentous Elite Sleep didn’t include the most frequently used dose of tart cherry juice; in fact, they used less than half of what was typically used in research. However, the other ingredients are in the clinically effective dosing range, so the positives weigh out the negatives.

Lastly, since this is advertised for athletes, Elite Sleep could’ve included additional ingredients that athletes are known to be deficient in, such as magnesium, zinc, and other B-complex vitamins. But overall, the ingredient list is solid.

Claims vs. Reality

If you recall from earlier, Momentous Elite Sleep is supposed to decrease the time it takes to fall asleep, increase REM sleep, decrease nighttime awakenings, reduce stress and anxiety, and promote exercise recovery.

All in all, the makers of Elite Sleep can likely stand by these claims. You will likely fall asleep faster based on the inclusion of melatonin. Next, you can likely expect increased REM sleep, decreased nighttime awakenings, and overall improved sleep quality thanks to melatonin, l-theanine, vitamin B6, and valerian.

Furthermore, valerian and l-theanine are potent ingredients that can reduce stress and anxiety, which indirectly should lead to an easier time falling asleep and higher sleep quality.

Finally, you may experience an increase in exercise recovery and a decrease in muscle damage and inflammation since there is tart cherry juice included. However, the dose is not as high as it should be for optimal results.

Who is Momentous Elite Sleep Best For?

Momentous Elite Sleep is advertised as a sleep supplement specifically for athletes. However, I believe anyone wanting to get better sleep could benefit from this product. With that being said, there are some ingredients in here that make it more specific for athletes, such as vitamin B6 and tart cherry juice.
