Laird Superfood Mushroom Coffee Review

Laird Superfood Mushroom Coffee is a delicious blend of coffee beans and “functional” mushrooms that supports overall well-being and vitality.

Did you know that there are thousands of different species of mushrooms found around the world? Contrary to popular belief, only about 80 of those species are poisonous and should be avoided, but thousands of species are still beneficial to the body.

Some mushroom species are even considered superfoods and provide benefits far beyond the nutritional benefits you’re used to.

The problem with mushrooms is that the Western World isn’t educated on the right species and how to add them to their daily diet. Other people are too scared to even think about adding mushrooms to their diet due to their unique texture, taste, and look.

Luckily, companies like Laird Superfood are making these superfood mushrooms more accessible to the Western World. There’s much to gain with supplements like Laird Superfood Mushroom Coffee, but also so much to learn, and that’s where we come in.

What Is Laird Superfood Mushroom Coffee?

Laird Superfood Mushroom Coffee is precisely as it sounds — a blend of coffee and mushrooms that help you get a ‘super’ start to your day. It’s the perfect way to enhance that morning cup of joe you drink every morning with the use of mushrooms.

For true coffee enthusiasts, they have two different formulas. The mushroom content is the same in both, but one formula features a medium roast coffee blend, and the other features a dark roast coffee blend.

They also offer both of them in a bundle, combined with their signature Superfood Creamer and a separate blend of functional mushrooms.

What Are Functional Mushrooms?

When you go to the grocery store and purchase mushrooms, you likely come across portobello and other white buttons. Those aren’t the type of mushrooms we’re talking about when we say functional mushrooms.

Functional mushrooms are mushrooms that have functional benefits — benefits beyond their normal nutritional value. They are extremely rich in antioxidants and are a powerful way to boost your immune system. Some of these benefits are often medicinal or adaptogenic.

In addition, functional mushrooms are known for providing other benefits, such as increasing cognitive function, enhancing the skin, improving digestion, and providing the body with energy. That’s why these mushrooms are commonly found in supplements — like Laird Superfood Mushroom Coffee.

Does Laird Coffee Taste Like Mushrooms?

Many Eastern countries use functional mushrooms in cooking the way the Western world uses other mushrooms. Since most people in the West aren’t too fond of mushrooms, they generally stay away from them rather than learn about them.

The great thing with supplements that utilize functional mushrooms is they help mask the taste and eliminate the weird look or texture they have. Typically found in a powder, these supplements can be added to anything with just a faint earthy taste to them.

Laird Superfood, for example, mixes its mushroom blend with coffee. The combination almost hides the mushroom taste entirely and allows you to enjoy the drink you’ve come to love your whole life.

Does Laird Coffee Have Caffeine?

Yes, Laird Coffee contains Peruvian coffee beans as one of its ingredients and therefore has caffeine.

The Difference Between Dark Roast And Medium Roast

Most coffee enthusiasts know the type of roast they like in their coffee, but those new to coffee might need help understanding the difference. The good news is the difference is very clear and straightforward.

Medium roast coffee isn’t roasted as long as dark roast coffee. With medium roast coffee, you get more of the actual taste of the bean, while the extra roasting time of the dark roast coffee causes it to lose some of its flavor.

In addition to that, dark roast coffee has a much bolder taste and is less acidic. It’ll mix much better with cream or milk.

What Claims Are Made About Laird Mushroom Coffee?

Before we examine the ingredients included in this supplement, we should discuss the various claims Laird Superfood makes about its Mushroom Coffee. This will give us a good idea of what they want us to know about the supplement.

Of course, we’ll later compare that to what we know about the supplement. Ideally, the two will match up, but that is only sometimes the case with supplements today.

  • Dairy-Free, Gluten-Free, Non-GMO, and Soy-Free
  • Paleo-Friendly, Vegan-Friendly, and Keto-Friendly
  • Made with premium, organic Peruvian coffee beans
  • A coffee blend that contributes to overall wellness
  • Uses a proprietary insert gas packaging system to maintain freshness

One thing I like about Laird Superfood Mushroom Coffee is they don’t overwhelm you with claims. They don’t mention any of the specific benefits behind the functional mushrooms other than that they contribute to overall wellness.

While that saves them from making any unnecessary or false claims, it hides what this formula can do for you. Don’t worry; that’s what we’re here for.

Laird Mushroom Coffee Ingredients

Now that we know the background behind this supplement, it’s time to look closely at what’s inside this formula. The good news is it’s a relatively simple formula with just four ingredients — Peruvian Arabica Ground Coffee, Chaga, Cordyceps, and Lion’s Mane.

We’ll break each ingredient down by its benefits, source, recommended dosage, and potential side effects if not taken as directed. Let’s get started!

Peruvian Arabica Ground Coffee

  • Benefits: Peru’s soil is one of the best for coffee beans and comes with a beautiful taste, natural flavor, and rich nutrient profile
  • Source: high-altitude bean, grown at 4,000 feet, hand-picked, and either medium or dark-roasted to suit your needs
  • Recommended Dosage: no more than two servings per day
  • Side Effects: anxiety, insomnia, digestive issues, muscle breakdown, high blood pressure and heart rate, and addiction when taken in high doses or frequently

Chaga Mushroom

  • Benefits: boosts immune system, fights inflammation and infections, reduces oxidative stress, lowers blood sugar and cholesterol, and helps prevent cancer
  • Source: also known as Inonotus obliquus, grown mainly on birch trees in cold climates, looks a lot like a piece of burnt charcoal, not pleasant to look at
  • Recommended Dosage: 100-1,0000mg per day
  • Side Effects: can prevent blood clotting and lead to irregular blood sugar levels in the body when taken in high doses

Cordyceps Mushroom

  • Benefits: increases ATP and energy in the body, improves the way your body uses oxygen, enhances exercise performance, holds anti-aging properties, fights inflammation, and reduces oxidative stress
  • Source: unique for growing on the larvae of insects, needs a living host to grow, doesn’t look or sound pleasing, but very beneficial
  • Recommended Dosage: 100-1,000mg
  • Side Effects: slow blood clotting, stomach ache, nausea, diarrhea, or dry mouth when taken in high doses

Lion’s Mane Mushroom

  • Benefits: improves cognitive ability, prevents dementia, enhances memory, relieves symptoms of anxiety and depression, improves digestive system, reduces inflammation and oxidative stress, good for overall wellness
  • Source: also known as hou tou gu or yamabushitake, looks like a white mini weeping willow, also resembles a lion’s mane, hence the name
  • Recommended Dosage: 100-1,000mg per day
  • Side Effects: difficulty breathing and rashes when taken in high doses or allergic

Laird Superfood Mushroom Coffee Pros vs. Cons

As powerful and beneficial as functional mushrooms are, mushroom supplements aren’t perfect and are prone to flaws. Other times it’s not that they’re a bad supplement, but there might be a better or cheaper alternative to consider.

That’s why knowing the pros and cons of each supplement is essential when determining which one is best for you. To summarize everything we’ve learned up to this point, let’s take a look at the pros and cons of Laird Superfood Mushroom Coffee.

Pros

  • Free shipping every day
  • Dairy-Free, Gluten-Free, Non-GMO, and Soy-Free
  • Paleo-Friendly, Vegan-Friendly, and Keto-Friendly
  • They have a superfood creamer that goes well with it

  • There are better alternatives out there

Claims vs. Reality

I love mushroom supplements because I understand their importance to a daily diet. I also understand how rarely they’re used in the Western World, which makes supplements like Laird Superfood Mushroom Coffee so great.

Most people already drink coffee regularly, and if you’re one of them, why not get a little extra boost with that coffee?

Laird uses three of the most popular functional mushrooms, which is good. Unfortunately, they only use a total of 500mg of functional mushrooms — combined between the three. While that’s enough to give you benefits, it’s not much compared to some other companies.

With that being said, this supplement does everything it says it does. Of course, it doesn’t really say it does too much since they don’t explain the benefits deeply or clearly. It’s safe to take, however and is definitely worth a try if you’ve never tried functional mushrooms before.

Laird Superfood Mushroom Coffee Alternatives

As we mentioned above, there are other alternatives to Laird Superfood Mushroom Coffee if you’re looking for something with more kick. The community and support behind functional mushrooms are growing every day.

When I look at the functional mushroom supplement market today, only one company stands above the rest — Four Sigmatic. They provide a wide range of supplements centered around mushrooms, making them the main competitor to Laird Superfood.

I think they’re better than Laird Superfood by a long shot. That’s not a knock against Laird, either. It’s still a good supplement; I just hold Four Sigmatic to high standards because they take it to a new level.

Four Sigmatic

Four Sigmatic has several coffee formulas that are all Fair-Trade coffee and organic from around the world. Their products include Four Sigmatic Chaga Elixir, Four Sigmatic Ground Mushroom Coffee, Four Sigmatic Mushroom Cacao Mix, and Four Sigmatic 10 Mushroom Blend, among others.

Their basic Ground Mushroom Coffee formula includes Lion’s Mane and Chaga, each with 250mg per serving. They also have an Adaptogen formula with Chaga and Ashwagandha for those that are stressed. Additionally, if you have digestive issues, try their Chaga, Turkey Tail, and Probiotic formula.

That’s just the coffee formulas, too. They also have protein blends, cacao blends, latte blends, shots, skincare, and so much more. Reasonably priced for what you get, I will never stop recommending Four Sigmatic to anyone who needs a quality mushroom supplement.

When you receive your Laird Superfood Mushroom Coffee, it comes in a sleek coffee blend pouch. The Medium Roast and Dark Roast formulas have different packaging designs, though.

The Medium Roast is orange mainly on the front and back but does have some brown on the bottom and sides. The name of the supplement, as well as the highlights of the supplement, are found on the front. The back has limited text and images, while the sides have more information about the coffee.

The Dark Roast packaging is a bit different. It’s orange as well but has more brown on the front. The labels are similar to the Medium Roast packaging but much smaller and less busy.

There’s 500mg of mushroom blend in each serving, meaning less than 200mg of each, which isn’t a lot.

The bags are 12oz and should last around three weeks to a month when taking one serving daily.

Final Thoughts: Laird Superfood Mushroom Coffee

If you’re starting out in the world of functional mushrooms, Laird Superfood Mushroom Coffee is worth a try. It includes the three well-known functional mushrooms, Chaga Mushroom, Cordyceps Mushroom, and Lion’s Mane Mushroom, which have all been shown to provide various health benefits. Add in their Superfood Creamer, and you will have a delicious morning beverage full of functional mushrooms.
