Working out is hard. Whether you are a seasoned gym go-er, a bashful beginner, or somewhere in between, it can be a challenge to push yourself for every workout. Because of this, many people have started looking for pre-workout supplements to get the most out of their time at the gym. 

Unfortunately, many of these supplements are created and marketed for men, leaving women with limited options. As a result, women have started reaching for Bloom Nutrition’s Pre-Workout designed for women. But does it really work or is it just smoke and mirrors? Let’s take a deeper look in this Bloom Pre-Workout review.

According to their website, Bloom Nutrition’s Pre-Workout offers a variety of performance-boosting benefits to help you reach your goals faster. Some of the benefits are claimed to include improved physical performance, improved energy, decreased fatigue during exercise, and improved muscular endurance during high-intensity training. These benefits are all reported to be enjoyed without added sugars or high levels of caffeine.

The main ingredients in Bloom Pre-Workout include beetroot, ginseng, beta-alanine, and caffeine from green tea leaves. These ingredients are marketed as research-backed on Bloom Nutrition’s website but are they really? Let’s look at some of the research behind these ingredients below. 

  • Beetroot – Studies have found beetroot juice to help boost levels of nitric oxide in the body. Nitric oxide is a compound that helps to increase blood flow and strengthen muscle contraction. Supplemental beetroot juice is believed to help improve cardiorespiratory endurance in athletes. However, it has yet to be determined if beetroot juice combined with other supplements has a positive or negative effect on performance.
  • Ginseng – Ginseng is believed to help improve athletic performance by increasing energy and fighting fatigue. A root plant used in traditional medicine for hundreds of years, ginseng is believed to provide a myriad of potential health benefits however, studies are still underway for many of them.

Ginseng is believed to help fight fatigue by lowering oxidative stress. Although most research on this is only available in animal studies. One study conducted on 364 cancer survivors fighting fatigue found that 2,000mg of supplemental ginseng taken for 8 weeks helped to significantly reduce fatigue. Some studies also suggest ginseng may have a beneficial effect on athletic performance however, the studies available are not large enough to provide sufficient evidence.

  • Beta-Alanine – Considered a non-essential amino acid, beta-alanine is believed to help boost muscular endurance in high-intensity exercise. Taking beta-alanine in supplement form helps to increase carnosine levels, another amino acid that is concentrated in muscle tissue. Carnosine works to reduce the acidity in our muscles during high-intensity exercise. The less acidity the less fatigue. Other studies have found beta-alanine supplementation to help increase time to exhaustion. This allows you to exercise for longer periods.
  • Green Tea Leaf – Green tea leaf provides natural caffeine without the jitteriness of other stimulants to provide energy. Many pre-workout products contain high levels of caffeine. Although this will provide a short-term boost in energy levels, it can also come with side effects such as jitteriness, anxiety, and difficulty sleeping, especially for those who exercise in the evenings. 

Green tea tends to have lower levels of caffeine compared to coffee and its effects take place gradually, allowing your body to better adjust and enjoy longer-term energy without the crash. When it comes to athletic performance, however, coffee may be the better choice unless you are sensitive to it

Does Bloom Pre-Workout Work?

Based on the research available for the ingredients in Bloom Pre-Workout supplement, this product shows promise. Although each ingredient has some research to back up its claims, no research is currently available on the effects of combining these ingredients in a single supplement. 

Consumers on the company’s website gave this product 4.9 out of 5 stars from 488 reviews. Many stated they felt energized without the jitteriness, enjoyed the flavor combinations, and felt it improved their overall exercise performance.

Who is it Best For?

Bloom Nutrition’s original pre-workout supplement is geared towards women who are new or seasoned fitness pros. This product will work best for this population, specifically those who are healthy and not taking any medications for any chronic conditions. Always speak with your doctor or health care provider before adding a supplement to your routine if you are taking medications.

Claims vs Reality

Based on Bloom Nutrition’s claims versus the research available on their product’s active ingredients, their original pre-workout supplement appears to be a great option. Their consumers appear to love it, it’s budget-friendly for most, and it contains ingredients that provide a good amount of research to back them up. The one caveat with this product is that there is no research available to prove the effects of these ingredients when combined.

Bloom Pre-Workout Safety & Side Effects

Bloom Nutrition does not list any potential side effects of their original pre-workout supplement. Based on the active ingredients listed, potential side effects are likely minimal and pertain mainly to potential allergic reactions or gastrointestinal discomfort. 

There have been some reports of hypotensive effects with beetroot along with an upset stomach. Ginseng supplementation has potential side effects that include insomnia and anxiety however, the other ingredients have had only mild reported reactions.
