- In Summary
For those in the business, one of our favorite questions is, “If you could only take one supplement, what would it be?” Although the supplement industry is nothing if not trendy, there are some tried and true responses. For many years the answer from athletes was a protein supplement. For bodybuilders, the answer was frequently creatine, followed by L-glutamine for repair and recovery. More mainstream consumers would cite vitamins and minerals. Still others would suggest EFAs, Essential Fatty Acids. Before the early 2000s, very few people would have suggested probiotics. But the times and trends are changing. From 2007 to 2012, probiotic consumption more than quadrupled and today, probiotic sales trail only vitamins and minerals.
In this review of Renew Life Probiotics, we’ll first discuss the organization that owns and manufactures the brand, answering another question, can you trust them? We’ll provide an abbreviated history of probiotics, and explain what they are, what they do, and how they benefit your health. We will suggest who might benefit from the use of probiotics and which probiotic may be right for you. In keeping with our standard review format, we’ll detail the Renew Life probiotic line of products, the key ingredients in a probiotic product, give our opinion of how the products perform, provide dosage recommendations, identify potential side effects, and finally provide pricing information and tell you where we suggest you purchase the products. That’s a lot of information, so we apologize in advance for this lengthy review. Let’s get started.
About Renew Life
Renew Life was founded in 1997, by husband and wife team Brenda and Stan Watson, shortly before the dramatic increase in probiotic popularity. The company is based in Palm Harbor, Florida. In the beginning, the company’s sales were primarily in the natural channel; however, today, their products are available in virtually every store in the food, drug, and mass-market channels.
In 2016 the company was acquired by the Clorox Company, a Fortune 500 consumer products company, of Clorox Bleach fame. In 2019 total Clorox revenues exceeded $6.2 billion. Let us just say that as a $6 billion company, Clorox must operate with the highest integrity in the natural products space. And, if $6.2 is not significant enough, Clorox is owned by P&G, Cincinnati based, Proctor and Gamble, with over $115.1 billion in assets.
You may not be a fan of big business, but from a liability standpoint alone, Renew Life earns our trust for doing business the right way. Renew Life is very conservative with their structure-function claims, and we assure you, any claims they make will be substantiated by science, or Clorox would not allow it.
Per Clorox’s 2016 press release, “The digestive supplement market currently represents sales of at least $10 billion in the U.S. alone and is currently growing at about seven percent annually. The probiotics subcategory, which is $1.3 billion in the U.S., is expected to grow at fifteen percent per year, and Renew Life’s Ultimate Flora brand is #1 in probiotic sales.”
Today, Ultimate Flora is the #2 brand in the U.S.
What are Probiotics?
For all their popularity today, probiotics had a slow start. They’ve been in our lives for ages as fermented foods, but nobody knew much about them until about 150 years ago. Fermented foods, what are they? Think of beer, or cheese, sauerkraut, or one of the more popular early forms of fermented foods, yogurt. Not only do these foods taste great, but they also infer health benefits. But, not until the 1990s did scientists start researching probiotics in earnest.
As scientists started studying the gut microbiome, the community of microbes that live in our intestinal tract, they discovered the interactions of bacteria in our bodies. This learning drove additional research that confirmed the beneficial health effects of good microbes and helped to launch today’s probiotics industry.
Your stomach, large intestine, and small intestine, together with your digestive system, is home to some 100 trillion bacteria. These bacteria are responsible for digesting our food, regulating our hormones, eliminating toxins, and producing vital nutrients. The beneficial bacteria in our gut represent some 80% of our immune cells, which protect us against colds, pathogens, viruses, and other “bugs.”
To answer our question, what are probiotics we referred to Mayo Clinic.
“Probiotics are foods or supplements that contain live microorganisms intended to maintain or improve the ‘good’ bacteria (normal microflora) in the body.”
So, probiotics, which are a certain type of friendly bacteria, provide health benefits when eaten. They are often taken as supplements that are supposed to colonize your gut with health-boosting microorganisms. There are dozens of different probiotic bacteria that offer these benefits. The most common groups include Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. Each group comprises different species, and each species has various strains. You’ll hear more about strains as we review the various Renew Life products.
Benefits of Probiotics
Starting with the most apparent benefit, probiotics help relieve digestive discomfort. They are crucial for good gut health, a balanced gut, which is essential for digestive and immune health. Remember, the beneficial bacteria in our gut are responsible for as much as 80% of our immune health.
Probiotics can lower the “bad” bacteria in your gut, the germs that cause illness or inflammation, and replace them with good or helpful bacteria. They have also been proven beneficial to address certain stomach conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, diarrhea, Crohn’s Disease, urinary tract infections, ulcerative colitis, and the cause of stomach ulcers.
Rather than cite a laundry list of other benefits, we’ll refer you to the various products developed by Renew Life and the conditions they support. See the Renew Life product range below.
Who Should Use Probiotics?
Anyone looking to generally improve their gut health and immune system or trying to promote a good balance of helpful bacteria in their system. Additionally, people who suffer from stomach issues such as diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, or inflammatory bowel disease may want to consider using probiotics.
Anyone who has severe immune deficiency issues or is being treated for cancer should not take probiotics without a doctor’s okay.

Key Ingredients in Renew Life Probiotics
With thirty-nine different Probiotic products, it would take a book to detail the ingredients in each Renew Life variety. Instead, we will use this segment to explain how to review a probiotic product and what to look for.
First, Renew Life probiotic products are free of GMOs, wheat, gluten, soy, dairy, eggs, shellfish, tree nuts, and artificial ingredients. Quality, purity, and potency are guaranteed through the expiration date. That is, the probiotics are guaranteed to be alive through the expiration date, at the stated potency. The products are manufactured in the USA in a GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) facility.
Other things to consider are clinically formulated products, supported by clinical trials for efficacy, and certified organic ingredients.
The two key facts to look at when considering a probiotic are the potency, the number of live cultures, and the number of strains. For instance, a product might state 25 billion live cultures from ten different strains. Multiple strains mimic the natural diversity in your gut.
Many of the Renew Life varieties include additional vitamins and minerals, in addition to the probiotic blends.
Which Renew Life Probiotic is Right for You?
Each person’s microbiome is unique and has different needs. And, different probiotics address different health conditions. Therefore, choosing the right type, or types of probiotic, is essential. There is no “one-size-fits-all.”
When trying to decide on a probiotic, start by making sure it has adequate potency and multiple strains of good bacteria. Next, if you have a specific concern, such as energy, or weight loss, see if there are products developed to address your condition.
Fortunately, Renew Life has a tool on its website to help you make this determination.
Recommended Dosage for Probiotics
The dosage varies by different products, either one or two vegetarian capsules per day. You will need to read the recommended dosage on the ingredient panel for each product to determine your proper dosage.
How Do Renew Life Probiotics Perform?
We are comfortable in stating that Renew Life probiotics perform in improving gut health, benefitting the immune system, and addressing certain stomach issues such as diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, or inflammatory bowel disease. Ongoing clinical studies are validating their use in addressing additional conditions.
Potential Side Effects of Probiotics
The Mayo Clinic tells us that probiotics side effects are rare, and most healthy adults can safely add foods that contain prebiotics and probiotics to their diets.
It should be noted, however, that probiotic supplements can trigger an allergic reaction. Other reported issues include mild stomach problems, gas, diarrhea, or bloating. These issues typically present in the first few days after you start taking them and usually go away after your body gets used to them.
As with any new supplement regimen, we recommend you first consult with your medical professional.
Renew Life Pricing
On the company website, prices range from the mid-teens to a high of $59.99. Renew Life is a popularly priced line, competitive in the market. There are cheaper alternatives, but we feel the credibility of the brand is worth the difference.
Best Places to Buy Renew Life Probiotics
