It was birthed in 2015 by a group of finance and tech entrepreneurs looking for a “clean” and natural multivitamin with an extra kick and none of the unnecessary ingredients. Not only does their multivitamin contain a slew of vitamins and minerals, but it also includes phytonutrients and other antioxidants.

According to their website, Feel multivitamins can help you with nearly everything. Feel claims their multivitamin was specifically formulated for:

While your first reaction to this litany of benefits is probably something along the lines of “if it seems to good to be true, it probably is,” you’d be right and wrong. Feel multivitamin contains a variety of ingredients that without a doubt are critical to everything listed. The real question becomes how true are these claims. Looking at the ingredients in greater detail will help answer this question.

Fat-Soluble Vitamins

Since these are fat-soluble vitamins it is best to they are taken with a meal containing some fat/oil.

Vitamin A (acetate)

Vitamin A is popular in many multivitamins, like Biotek Bio-35. Vitamin A, or retinol, is critical for normal growth and development throughout your life. As the name retinol implies, it is also vital for preserving retinal health in your eye. Vitamin A can also help support the lining of your throat and esophagus due to upper respiratory inflammation.

Vitamin D 3 (as Vitashine)

Our skin produces vitamin D every day with the help of UV rays from the sun. Too much sun exposure and too little sun exposure can lead to dramatic issues. Supplementing with vitamin D, especially as the preferred D 3 form, is a great way to minimize those risks. Most people fall into vitamin D insufficiency and even deficiency today. Many physicians will recommend between 1000 and 5000 IUs of vitamin D a day to maintain healthy vitamin D levels. While the 440 IUs found in Feel multivitamin may sound like a lot, it is quite low. To put this in perspective many pediatricians recommended doses greater than 400 IUs for newborns and infants.

Vitamin E (as Natural Succinate)

Tocopherols and tocotrienols are families of compounds that make up vitamin E. Succinate, or d-alpha-tocopherol is just one of the 4 tocopherols. There are also 4 tocotrienols. These compounds have important antioxidant functions throughout our bodies. Many physicians recommend supplementing vitamin E as a mix of tocopherols and tocotrienols. This helps to maintain the natural balance of these compounds in our bodies. Supplementing with just one tocopherol will not provide much benefit as a
result.

Vitamin K2 (as Mk7)

Vitamin K has traditionally been thought of as a key factor in blood clotting. New evidence has been showing that vitamin K plays a much larger role. Specifically, vitamin K2 helps with cardiovascular and bone health, along with blood clotting. It is capable of doing this by regulating calcium metabolism in the blood. The science of vitamin K2 gets more confusing when you look at the forms available. Vitamin K2
as MK7 is often preferred over its relative MK4. This is due to the fact MK7 is active in your blood much longer and as a result, you do not need as much. The 110mcg of vitamin K2 in Feel multivitamin is an excellent dose and form.

Water-Soluble Vitamins

B complex (B1, B2, Nicotinamide, Pantothenate, Pyridoxine, Methylcobalamin, Biotin, Folic)

Riboflavin, vitamin B2 is a very common vitamin supplement marketed to help with energy production. Riboflavin is required by the enzyme Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR). This enzyme is responsible for converting folic acid/folate to the active form, 5-MTHF. Riboflavin is often marketed to help with energy and fat metabolism.

Folate is a coenzyme responsible for many different actions. Folate has gained notoriety due to insights into genetics. A single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), is a genetic mutation where one nucleic acid is switched with another. Concerning folate, two types of SNPs may occur which alter gene function. They are often referred to as C677T or A1298C. While one single base alteration out of approximately 3 billion bases may seem insignificant, it is not. These genetic changes result in a dramatic reduction in the body’s ability to transform folic acid into its active 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF). People without the SNP process folic acid normally and there would be no need to use the much more costly 5-MTHF form. With all that said, Feel multivitamin uses the methylated folate which is great. However, it is concerning that on their product page they state, “Some research indicates some people do not have the MTHFR gene so cannot absorb Folic Acid in its cheaper unnatural form.” What’s concerning about this statement is how off the mark they are with their understanding of this gene’s function. Having an alteration of MTHFR does not alter your ability to absorb the vitamin, it alters your ability to process the vitamin.

Vitamin B6, similar to folate, is a coenzyme involved in numerous metabolic pathways in the body. Most people tend to think of vitamin B6 as an energy booster. The active pyridoxine-5-phosphate is needed to breakdown glycogen stores for energy. Additionally, pyridoxine is used in the methylation cycle along with folate and methylcobalamin. Without B6, levels of homocysteine may rise. Elevated homocysteine is associated with a higher risk of a heart attack.

Vitamin B12 functions in similar pathways as folate and vitamin B6. Vitamin B12 deficiencies may lead to anemia. Anemia occurs when the body is not producing enough red blood cells. Vitamin B12 has two available forms; cyanocobalamin and methylcobalamin. Cyanocobalamin is synthetic and only found in supplements. Methylcobalamin is the superior option as it is a natural form that does not need to be broken down. Feel multivitamin contains methylcobalamin which is the most efficient form
available.

Vitamin C (as ascorbic acid)

Vitamin C is one of the most important antioxidants in our body. In addition to this, it also helps maintain collagen production. Vitamin C deficiencies can lead to something called scurvy. One of the telltale signs of scurvy is bleeding gums that result from collagen breakdown. There is a debate about ascorbic acid and natural vitamin C but evidence shows no difference between the two. Feel multivitamin has 100mg of ascorbic acid.

Calcium (as calcium citrate)

Calcium is commonly associated with bone health. But, calcium is required for much, much more than just that. Calcium regulates muscle contraction and cellular communication along with other minerals like magnesium. Both vitamin D and vitamin K2 are responsible for absorbing and storing calcium correctly. Calcium can come in a variety of forms; salts, amino acid chelates, and oxides. While calcium citrate is not the best option available for maximal absorption, it is not the worst either. However, the dose is extremely low and is not enough, even for a multivitamin.

Chromium (as chromium picolinate)

Chromium picolinate is steadily gaining as the preferred form in regulating blood sugar. Chromium picolinate research continues to grow. Research suggests patients take 600mcg of chromium picolinate to support normal blood sugar in diabetics. Feel is not solely designed to reverse diabetes and its dose of 75mcg of chromium is quite good for a daily multivitamin.

Copper (as copper bisglycinate)

Another trace mineral, copper is only needed in minute amounts. In fact, copper deficiency is often the result of too much zinc in the diet. The two elements compete for absorption through the same pathway.

Iron (as iron glycinate)

Iron is directly involved in transporting oxygen into the body and carbon dioxide out of the body. It is bound to the protein hemoglobin. Women are at a higher risk of iron deficiency due to their menstrual cycle. However, there is a risk for getting too much iron which is why physicians will often recommend it as a stand-alone supplement rather than part of a multivitamin.

Magnesium (as magnesium citrate)

Magnesium is a cofactor in over literally hundreds of different processes in our bodies. Nearly 70% of the American public are deficient in magnesium. Magnesium deficiencies often contribute to poor sleep, muscle spasms, headaches, and general irritability. Magnesium also plays a role in blood sugar control.

The importance of magnesium has lead to the creation of numerous supplement forms on the market. Magnesium is best as a chelate, bound to an amino acid to enhance intestinal absorption. Common chelates include magnesium bis-glycinate, magnesium threonate, etc. Magnesium may also be sold as a mineral salt such as magnesium chloride. The magnesium with the lowest absorption/bioavailability happens to be magnesium hydroxide. Feel utilizes magnesium citrate in their formulations. Similar to their calcium, it is neither the best nor the worst form available. However, it is also dosed far below anything meaningful, even in a multivitamin.

Manganese (as manganese glycinate)

Manganese is considered a trace mineral. We do not need as much manganese as other elements like iron or magnesium. However, manganese is still important to the biological activity of growth,
reproduction, and metabolism. A little goes a long way with manganese.

Iodine (as potassium iodide)

Iodine is a key component of our thyroid hormones. Without it, your energy, mood, appetite, and much more will be dramatically altered. It’s interesting how important iodine is that we only need a very little amount. Too much iodine can cause as many issues as too little iodine.

Selenium (as selenomethionine)

Selenium is a trace mineral that people are often deficient in. Selenium is required to maintain thyroid function and inflammatory balance. One Brazil nut is enough to provide more than enough selenium for a person each day. Selenomethionine tends to be the preferred for recommended by integrative/function medicine practitioners.

Boron (as DiSodium Borate)

Another trace mineral, the daily intake of boron is very low. It is involved in maintaining bone structure as well as muscle function and testosterone production.

Zinc (as zinc citrate)

Another vitally important element, zinc, plays a large role in the immune system and protein synthesis. As mentioned previously, all-metal elements may come in a variety of forms that enhance absorption/activity. While zinc citrate is not the best form for absorption, it is also not the worst.

Alpha Lipoic Acid

Alpha-lipoic acid, or ALA, has been shown to help numerous health conditions. ALA is often recommended for diabetes and diabetes-associated neuropathy. ALA can help pull glucose out of the blood and reduce free radicals. As a result, ALA lowers inflammation. Manufacturing ALA can be difficult. Cheap ALA is often contaminated with benzene which is a known carcinogen. There is no way to know for the quality of ALA, any supplement company is using without them at least disclosing than information on their labels.

Bioperine

Bioperine is a patented form of piperine. It seems to be all the rage in the supplement industry to “increase bioavailability.” This compound is a component found in black pepper. Piperine has been shown to increase the intestinal absorption of various nutrients. This does come with some drawbacks though. Almost no one talks about the increased absorption of everything else we ingest or have in our gut. This means viruses, bacteria, protein, and potentially harmful compounds can also be absorbed into the bloodstream. There hasn’t been enough research done to fully understand the safety concerns associated with indiscriminately increasing intestinal absorption with piperine.

Citrus Bioflavonoids

Citrus bioflavonoids could refer to literally countless compounds found in citrus fruits. For example, some citrus bioflavonoids have been shown to reduce cholesterol. Other citrus bioflavonoids have been shown to ease allergy symptoms. Feel does not list which citrus bioflavonoids they use which makes it impossible to assess quality and rationale for including it in the product.

Coenzyme Q10

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) can refer to ubiquinone or ubiquinol. There has been an ongoing debate about which form is superior. Regardless of this debate, CoQ10 is fat-soluble and not water-soluble. The use of powdered or crystalline CoQ10 in combination products like multivitamins is not recommended. This is because the powder does not absorb well and is extremely expensive to produce. Additionally, it is often dosed far lower than what the research recommends as a result of its cost. Most physicians recommend at least 100mg of CoQ10 and Feel contains 30mg.

Grape Seed Extract

Grape seed extract is a potent source of antioxidants and immune-boosting compounds called proanthocyanidins. In addition to boosting immune function, grape seed extract has been shown to reduce inflammation as well as improve blood pressure. However, Feel only contains 47.5mg most research recommends around 300mg.

L-Glutamine

L-glutamine is an amino acid that is found throughout the entire body from muscle to the intestinal lining. Glutamine is frequently used to aid in muscle recovery following exercise. It is also used to help rebuild the gut in patients suffering from “leaky gut.” Common doses of glutamine range, but to see any benefit, doses are often 2 or more grams per day. Feel contains 0.05g.

Lutein

Lutein functions alongside vitamin A in the eyes to support the retina and other ocular structures. Some evidence has shown that supplementing with lutein and some other vitamins can prevent and potentially reverse age-related macular degeneration. The recommended dose of lutein for eye health is approximately 10mg. Feel contains 2mg of lutein per serving.

Reishi Mushrooms

Mushrooms have long been credited for their medicinal purposes. Many mushrooms have been shown to boost the immune system. This may all be due to the molecular structure of mushroom cells. Mushrooms contain a high concentration of a complex carbohydrate called beta-glucans. These beta-glucans can help to stimulate the production of new and healthy immune cells. Reishi mushrooms also contain triterpenes and sterols. triterpenes can improve blood pressure and sterols can support hormone balance. The recommended dose of Reshi mushrooms is approximately 25-100g daily.

Spirulina Powder

For years spirulina was THE superfood. Recent evidence may suggest spirulina is as beneficial as any other vegetable. Additionally finding a good source for spirulina may be difficult. Since spirulina is algae and primarily harvested from the ocean, its environment is less than safe. Spirulina is packed with a variety of antioxidants. The recommended dose of spirulina is 7g, Feel contains 0.015g.

Turmeric Extract (95% Curcuminoids)

Turmeric is a traditional spice in Indian cuisine like curry. Now, you can find turmeric in everything from topical lotions to coffee and everywhere in between. Turmeric contains a family of compounds called curcuminoids. The most studied compound in the curcuminoid family is curcumin.
Nearly all of turmeric’s benefits are credited to the dose of curcumin. Curcumin has been shown to reduce inflammation. Recently curcumin has been getting attention as a weight-loss aid. This is because curcumin may help to boost metabolism and increase fat breakdown.

 

NuMag/Rice Flour/ NuFlow

All of these ingredients fall into a category called excipients or flow agents. These ingredients are inert and only have a function in the manufacturing process. They work to make sure machines do not get gunked up and that the little to no ingredients are wasted. These are alternatives to conventional flow agents like magnesium stearate and silicon dioxide to name a few.

Multivitamins, in general, have an uneasy history when it comes to research. Feel has higher quality ingredients than your average drug store multivitamin and is fairly priced as well. The formulation contains vitamins and minerals that are backed by research.

Keep in mind, multivitamins are simply designed to fill gaps in your diet and boost your overall health. Keep your expectations realistic. While Feel Multivitamins can improve your overall health, they are not “miracle” supplements (no multivitamin is).
