California native Shailene Woodley has been acting since she was a child. She took acting classes with Anthony Meindl. Woodley’s first role was in the 1999 tv movie Replacing Dad. A leading role in the 2004 tv film A Place Called Home earned her a nomination for a Young Artist Award. Woodley starred in The Secret Life of the American Teenager from 2008-2013. Her film debut came in 2011 with The Descendants and earned her a Golden Globe nomination. Other acting credits include The Fault in Our Stars, The Mauritanian, The Fallout and HBO’s Big Little Lies. Woodley is an environmental activist, an Oceans Ambassador for Greenpeace, and a board member of the political action committee, Our Revolution. She was briefly engaged to NFLer Aaron Rodgers. She has millions of followers on social media. Woodley is 5 feet, 8 inches tall and weighs about 125 lbs.

Woodley’s environmental activism impacts her approach to diet. She eats all natural, organic foods, and even forages for about a third of it, going up in to the Hollywood hills to find edible herbs. She also must sometimes change her diet based on acting roles, including a starvation diet for Adrift, which she found very challenging. To combat illness, she adds in extras like raw garlic. She always drinks plenty of clean, pure water to stay hydrated.

Pain & Gain
While training for Divergent, Woodley says the first week was all about being achy and smelling like muscle cream, but after that, she really started to see a change.
Woodley worked with 5th-degree black belt JJ Perry who also acted as fight coordinator for Divergent. Perry also trained Hugh Jackman to play in Wolverine.
Physical training for a role is a Hollywood standard, and Woodley is no exception. Her trainer says that although she didn’t look quite ready to join the UFC, she got very fit for Divergent.
For Divergent, Woodley and co-star Theo James began training 3 weeks before filming began.
Woodley may play a futuristic character, but her exercises are distinctly old-school, including burpees, sit-ups, and push-ups
Woodley did plenty of abs work for Divergent, including planks, cross-crunches, and classic sit-ups.
A Shailene Woodley Divergent Routine
Jog: 25 min on treadmill at relaxed pace.
Jump rope: 90 sec on/30 sec rest x 4 cycles. Work your way up to 4 minutes of jumping/1 min rest.
Box jumps: 10 jumps x 4 sets.
Single leg balances: Standing on right foot with left knee bent at 90 degrees. Have partner stand across from you hands extended at waist level. Quickly jump so right knee touches their hand, keeping left leg hovering, before landing on right foot again. Do 30/side.
Knee drives: Crouch then rise up, lifting knee up to chest level. Tap toes to ground & repeat. Do 30/side.
Burpees: 15 x 3 sets
Push-ups: 10 each of standard, diamond, and wide arm.
Lunge kicks: In lunge position, quickly stand and kick out back leg. Do 20 lunges x 2 sets/side.
Planks: 1 min, working up to 90 sec. Repeat using 1 arm. Switch sides. Supporting arm can be forward for balance.
Cross crunches: 30
Old-school sit-ups: 10 regular/10 halfway/10 static for 10 sec.

Woodley admits to struggling with insomnia for years. It took self-compassion including a break from acting and weekly therapy sessions to shed her anxiety which allowed her to get more of that all-important sleep.
Woodley says that although she was working as an actress as a teen, she went to public school, auditioning after school, and would just hang out with the other kids after soccer practice and not mention her acting gigs.
At age 15, Woodley was diagnosed with scoliosis and wore a body brace to prevent the curve from worsening.
