Gundry MD Active Advantage Review – Can It Provide Anti-Aging Support?

The objective of anti-aging protocols isn’t to die as old as possible, rather it’s to die healthy as late as possible. It’s a critical difference that speaks to the quality of life as we age versus simply extending life. The goal of anti-aging medicine is not just extending your life span but lengthening your healthy, functional lifespan. Such is the promise of Active Advantage, a dietary supplement from Gundry MD.

The graying of America is unprecedented today as the Boomers of the fifties and sixties are living longer. Per the U.S. Census Bureau, by the year 2034, older adults will represent a larger percentage of the population than children – for the first time in U.S. history! An entire industry, approaching $55 billion, and growing rapidly, has emerged to address this megatrend. The medical community, personal product companies, and supplement manufacturers have developed products, procedures, and protocols to mitigate the effects of aging.

So let’s take a look at the anti-aging supplement, Gundry MD Active Advantage. This product claims to help boost energy, strength, and metabolism as we age. Does it actually work? We will cover that and more in our Gundry MD Active Advantage review. First, let’s discuss how we age so we can get a better understanding of how Gundry MD Active Advantage may help.

How Do We Age?

The study of aging is Gerontology. One of the first scientific theories on aging posited that our bodies begin to deteriorate after the age of reproduction due to the ravages of time. Essential hormones, strength/muscle mass, and VO2 max peak in our mid-twenties and gradually decline. Others believed aging was a mechanical issue, brought on by a lifetime of wear and tear on the body’s parts. In 1956 a Cal Berkley Ph.D. proposed the “free radical theory of aging,” that free radicals were a primary contributor to aging and death; that DNA damage from free radicals could cause gene mutations leading to cancer, heart disease, and an inability for cells to function correctly.

Today many scientists believe that aging is a function of accumulated wear and tear from toxins, free-radical damage, chronic inflammation, declining hormone levels, DNA damage, disease, and stress. Others disagree; Dan Buettner, author of The Blue Zones, contends that genes represent only twenty-five percent of the aging process and that the other 75% is attributable to lifestyle choices.

Today, there is a consensus that free-radical damage, chronic inflammation, and telomere damage are three primary causes of aging, disease, and death.

We apologize for the extended lead-in; however, it sets the stage for Doctor Gundry’s Active Advantage.

About Gundry MD Active Advantage

Active Advantage is a complex, doctor-formulated dietary supplement from Gundry MD. It comes in capsule form, featuring potent antioxidants including CoQ10, Astaxanthin, and Vitamin E tocotrienols, and tocopherols. Dr. Gundry’s forte is digestive health and the microbiome. He is one of the industry’s leading authorities on the topic after authoring several New York Times bestsellers on diet, nutrition, and gut health. With Active Advantage, Gundry MD ventures into the anti-aging arena. The product promises to combat free radical damage and boost energy while improving both mental and physical endurance.

GundryMD Active Advantage Supplement

This review explains the relationship between oxidation (free-radical damage) and chronic inflammation and how antioxidants counteract both. We do a deep dive into the key ingredients, many of which are patented, trademarked compounds. And, for those of you who may not be as familiar with Vitamin E, we explain full-spectrum, tocotrienols, and tocopherols.

Gundry MD Active Advantage Ingredients

Increased energy production and reducing free-radical damage are the two methods Active Advantage employs to deliver its purported benefits. Astaxanthin and CoQ10, both powerful antioxidants, also play a role in producing energy. Astaxanthin promotes mitochondria production, the powerhouse of a cell for energy, which also converts glucose to ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the principal molecule for storing and transferring energy in cells. CoQ10 further supports these ATP levels.

GundryMD Active Advantage Supplement Facts

Each of the ingredients (listed below) plays a role in combatting free radicals and chronic inflammation. Oxidative stress and inflammation are intertwined. Free radicals induce an inflammatory response, and chronic inflammation causes more free radicals. Note: there are two types of inflammation, acute such as when you experience redness and swelling from a cut or infection, and systemic, low-level inflammation, a primary risk factor for cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and heart disease. As you see in the notes below, many of the compounds in Active Advantage have anti-inflammatory properties as well as being antioxidants.

Gundry MD frequently uses patented and trademarked ingredients in their products, but rarely to the extent seen in Active Advantage – each compound in the formula is trademarked.

Vitamin E from EVNol, 7 mg

EVNol’s E is a fat-soluble vitamin made from red palm oil, containing the full spectrum of Vitamin E. E has an antioxidant effect that defends the gastrointestinal system against free radical damage and may be beneficial for skin, eyes, and supporting the immune system.

Vitamin E comprises two chemical groups, four tocotrienols (alpha, beta, gamma, delta) and four tocopherols (alpha, beta, gamma, delta). Our Western diet and most supplements contain a higher concentration of tocopherols. The difference is in the chemical make-up of the two, with tocopherols having a saturated tail versus tocotrienols being unsaturated.

Astaxanthin, Hawaiian Astaxanthin, 5 mg

One of the most powerful antioxidants in the world, able to move throughout the body, protecting our cells. Astaxanthin is a carotenoid found in certain algae responsible for the pink-red color in salmon.

Although Gundry uses a registered trademark for its Hawaiian Astaxanthin, it does not use the branded name BioAstin, from Nutrex. BioAstin is shown to support skin, eyes, heart, and joints in clinical trials at a dosage of 12 mg.

Kaneka Q10 from Kaneka Nutrients, 50 mg

CoQ10 is a vitamin-like substance, a potent antioxidant, present in every cell in your body. The Kaneka Q10 has been used in clinical trials for more than thirty years and is proven to enhance energy production, increase stamina, and improve overall health. Since our natural levels of CoQ10 decline with age, supplementing to improve cellular energy production is a sound strategy.

Fulvic Minerals, MLG-50 from GlycoLife Sciences, 100 mg

Fulvic minerals are substances derived from decomposed organic matter that act as antioxidants and electrolytes. Their health benefits include protection against oxidation, decreasing systemic inflammation, and aiding the immune system.  The fulvic acid component of MLG-50 contains more than 60 minerals and trace elements responsible for carrying vitamins and other nutrients to the proper places throughout our bodies.

Mixed Tocotrienols and EVNol Full Spectrum Tocotrienols, 30 mg

Vitamin E reappears for the second time in the formula. The EVNol ingredients contain naturally occurring tocotrienol and tocopherol from red palm fruits plus additional phytonutrients.

Gundry MD Active Advantage Benefits

As a corporate philosophy, Gundry MD is conservative in their health benefit and structure-function claims for their products. We attribute this to the doctor’s conservative nature and that not all trademarked ingredients in Gundry products are dosed at the levels used in clinical trials. (Unless a product contains the same or greater dosage as that used in clinical trials, the ingredient manufacturer prohibits the brand from quoting structure-function claims).

Active Advantage - Anti-aging Support

Benefits claimed for Gundry MD Active Advantage center on:

  • Anti-aging support
  • Increased energy, endurance, and mental stamina
  • Improved mobility due to reduced joint and muscle soreness
  • Better digestive health and possible weight management
  • Less visible free radical damage such as wrinkles

The benefits tend to be a bit vague and subjective lacking hard data to support their effectiveness.

Recommended Dosage

The product’s Supplement Facts panel advises you to take one Active Advantage capsule in the morning with 8 ounces of water (or any beverage of your choice) and suggests you do so before the first meal of your day.

How Does Gundry MD Active Advantage Perform?

How does one know if an anti-aging supplement is working? Is it strictly the absence of a catastrophic event such as a heart attack, stroke, or other serious illness? Improved energy is vague, subjective, may be a placebo effect or the result of other changes in diet or exercise. Likewise, how do you measure mental stamina? We doubt Gundry MD Active Advantage alone will improve joint health or eliminate wrinkles, graying hair, or age-related weight gain.

However, the potent antioxidants in Gundry MD Active Advantage, with their anti-inflammatory properties, will work, reducing oxidative stress and chronic inflammation. We’d prefer to see some of the compounds in the formula at higher dosages; however, there is a synergistic effect of combining the various ingredients.

Active Advantage - improving both mental and physical endurance

Our suggestion is to take Gundry MD Active Advantage as a prophylactic, a preventative measure, combined with changes in lifestyle choices as mentioned in Dan Buettner’s book:

  • Avoidance of tobacco and alcohol in moderation
  • Healthy diet
  • Regular exercise, for mind and body
  • Reduce stress
  • Rest and recovery – sleep

Is Gundry MD Active Advantage Safe?

Given the ingredients and dosages in Gundry MD Active Advantage, the product is generally considered safe for healthy adults with little risk of overdosing or interactions with other medications. The company has reported no adverse events.

The only area for potential concern is with the Vitamin E tocotrienols that have anticoagulant properties. People with certain blood disorders, and those taking anticoagulant medications, should avoid taking them.

Too much E can create dizziness, headaches, abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea. Although the RDA for E is only 15 mg, and Active Advantage contains a combined 37 mg, the tolerable upper limit is 1,000 mg.

Before adding any new supplement to your regimen, we suggest you speak with your healthcare professional.
