Som Sleep was developed in response to the Som team’s own problems falling and staying asleep, The team behind Som Sleep were unwilling to resort to dangerous conventional sleep aids to remedy their sleeping issues, so they instead turned to a healthier, more reliable alternative.
Som wanted a natural solution that was not only safe but also easy to use. A restful night’s sleep is as effortless as simply opening a can and enjoying a uniquely berry-flavored, non-carbonated beverage before bed.
So, is Som Sleep what you’ve been looking for? There are quite a few sleep supplements out there, from Performance Lab Sleep to Melatrol, so it can be difficult to figure out which is right for you. In this review of Som Sleep, we’ll go over its benefits, its ingredients, and ultimately help you decide if it is worth the purchase.
About Som Sleep
As its name implies, Som Sleep is a product designed to help you fall asleep more easily and stay asleep throughout the night. This sleep aid utilizes a drug-free formula of all-natural ingredients in the form of a small, 8.1oz berry-flavored beverage. It is available either sweetened with natural cane sugar, or as a sugar free version, sweetened with monk fruit and stevia.
What are the Benefits of Som Sleep Aid?
It Supports Sleep
With 3mg of melatonin (your body’s natural sleep hormone), this sleep product can help you fall asleep more easily. This sleep aid also contains the amino acids GABA and L-theanine to help your body remain in a relaxed state, helping promote a deep, consistent night of sleep.
It Isn’t Habit Forming
With nothing toxic or harmful in it, every night that you use this sleep product, your body doesn’t get dependent on it. This is because your body already naturally produces melatonin, so this is really just a boost.
It’s Drug-free
The product doesn’t contain any dangerous pharmaceuticals or sketchy “all natural” drugs, instead including simple amino acids, minerals, and a hormone your body already produces.
What are the Ingredients in Som Sleep?
Som Sleep includes five main ingredients in its formula. These ingredients include L-theanine, GABA, Melatonin, Magnesium Citrate, and Vitamin B6. Below, we will take a closer look at each of these ingredients and what they are designed to do to get you a better night’s sleep.
L-theanine
Found in green tea, gharana, and mate’, L-theanine is an amino acid known to relieve stress and anxiety, helping you feel more relaxed and initiating a deep sleep.
GABA
GABA is an amino acid naturally manufactured by the body. It is considered a “valium-like” neurotransmitter due to its calming effects on the brain. GABA has also been proven to help you fall asleep faster and experience better quality sleep.
Melatonin
Melatonin is another hormone manufactured by your body that can often causes that drowsy feeling you may experience as you fall asleep. However, stress, caffeine, work, and other circadian rhythm disruptions can cause an under-production of this hormone, which results in insomnia and poor sleep patterns. Melatonin supplements can help get you to a more regulated, normal sleep cycle.
The 3mg of melatonin in Som Sleep should be ample to treat even the most stressed-out, over-caffeinated of us.
Magnesium Citrate
Magnesium is an essential mineral found in many foods, including leafy greens, nuts, meat, and shellfish. It also has relaxing qualities that help ease muscle tension and help you stay asleep throughout the night.
But, while the 40mg of magnesium citrate included in Som Sleep is something, it falls far short of the approximately 400mg recommended for adults.
Vitamin B6
This is an essential vitamin that helps calm nerves and relaxation in the body. Som Sleep includes a generous 2mg of vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) in their formula to promote relaxation and get you more high quality shut eye.
Does Som Sleep Actually Work?
With its combination of effective ingredients all working in conjunction to promote deep, healthy sleep, we can conclude that this product definitely works.
Its ingredients are backed by science, meeting company claims and ensuring you’re not just wasting money on an ineffective product. However, the product needs to be used along with proper sleep scheduling, sleep hygiene, and monitoring of stimulants too close to your bedtime.
In other words, while the product isn’t snake oil, it also isn’t a magic sleep formula that will cure all of your sleep problems.
In addition, there are definitely more cost-effective formulas on the market that can do the same thing for less. For instance, taking solely melatonin supplements will provide similar benefits for just a fraction of the price of sleep drinks.
Who Is Som Sleep Best For?
Anyone experiencing stress or age-related sleep problems, including trouble falling asleep and staying asleep, could absolutely benefit from this product.
It’s also important to note that it should only be used by those with around 8-hours to commit to sleeping. Additionally, pregnant women should not use the product.
It is also advised that Som Sleep not be consumed along with alcohol, drugs, or other sleep aids.
Claims vs. Reality
In terms of the authenticity and effectivity behind these claims, the company makes no claims it can’t support. The company assures the consumer that the product operates both safely and effectively, while also being drug-free and non-habit forming.
So far, everything we see is true and backed by science.
Is Som Sleep Safe?
Melatonin can make you feel groggy the next day, although Som Sleep claims their drinks won’t. Some may, however, need to avoid drinking the entire can for this reason, especially those who are physically smaller in size.
There is also some yet-unproven concern that using an outside source of melatonin may signal the body to stop producing its own, which could conceivably cause dependency on it. Again though, more research needs to be done to prove this claim’s efficacy.
As far as the other ingredients go, as long as the product is used as directed and the user has no allergies to any of its ingredients, there are no other notable safety concerns or side effects.
The product is also gluten-free, certified non-GMO, and contains no artificial ingredients. It does however include artificial sweeteners in the formula, which may cause bloating or digestive upset.
Where To Buy Som Sleep
The bad news is that at its current sale price of $23.99 per 12-pack, Som Sleep is pretty expensive, especially since the standard price is $29.99.
When it comes to this sleep drink, we can’t really justify that high price as there are plenty of other, less-expensive products on the market that can produce the same efficacy fora cheaper price. That being said, none of these supplements come in this liquid, drinkable form. However, we wish the formula and drink was slightly more soothing as opposed to a grape flavor of canned juice. For now, we do find the price too high to justify, and in the end, we recommend sticking to the over-the-counter melatonin alternatives, which achieve the same results at a much lower price (and without the artificial sweeteners).
