Born in London, Ontario, Canada, Rachel McAdams’s first love was ice skating which she began at age 4. She also developed an interest in performing and participated in theater summer camps. In school, McAdams wasn’t keen on academics but she loved sports and student activities like student council. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts in 2001. Her tv debut also came in 2001 with Shotgun Love Dolls and My Name is Tanino. The following year, McAdams played in The Hot Chick, and her breakthrough came in 2004 with Mean Girls and The Notebook. In 2005, she starred in Wedding Crashers, and she earned a BAFTA nomination for The Family Stone. McAdams took a few years off, then came back to star in many more films, including The Time Traveler’s Wife, Midnight in Paris, and Doctor Strange. TV acting credits include True Detective and Spotlight, for which she received an Oscar nomination. McAdams supports many charities, including environmental cause. From 2007-’11, she ran an eco-website called greenissexy.org. McAdams also narrated the documentary Take Me to the River. She has 2 children with screenwriter Jamie Linden. Despite a limited presence on social media, she has hundreds of thousands of followers on her unofficial fan pages. McAdams is 5 feet, 8 inches tall and weighs about 125 lbs.

Suffering from insomnia, McAdams admits to taking advice from her grocer and trying marijuana to help her sleep. Instead, she heard someone singing opera for the next 5 hours.
McAdams auditioned for the role of good girl Cady Heron in Mean Girls and Linday Lohan auditioned for mean girl Regina George, but the director thought they were better suited to the other role and so they were switched.
McAdams once lied to land a role. Knowing that working with horses would be required for To the Wonder, she hid her allergy to horse hair. But then her eyes swelled up so much, she couldn’t see.
McAdams’ sister Kayleen is a star in her own right: she is a Hollywood makeup artist and the two have worked together on multiple films.

McAdams and co-star Ryan Gosling were born in the same hospital in Ontario. While they did not get along at all during the filming of The Notebook, they eventually dated. Even after they broke up, they remained good friends.
