Charlize Theron grew up on a farm in South Africa and began dancing ballet at age 6. When she was 16, she entered and won a modeling contest. She modeled for a couple of years but when she turned 18, she moved to New York City to attempt a career in ballet. Knee injuries ended those plans and Theron thenmoved to LA to try acting, but her accent was a barrier which she worked very hard to erase. She was discovered in a bank while arguing with a teller and soon scored a small role in Children of the Corn III. More important roles soon followed, such as The Devil’s Advocate, The Cider House Rules and then her famous role in Monster for which she won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe. She became a US citizen in 2008. She was in a long-term relationship with Stuart Townsend and also linked to Sean Penn, and she has adopted 2 children. Theron is a social activist, philanthropist and advocate for The Global Fund which fights AIDS, TB and malaria. Theron is 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighs about 120 lbs.

Theron has had to gain, and then lose weight, for her various acting roles. To gain weight for Tully, she says her ‘drug of choice’ was potato chips, and she said it took a year and a half to bounce back after Tully, much longerthan it did when she gained weight for Monster. Theron’s healthy diet of choice is based on raw plant-based foods, but she does not call herself a vegetarian. She has things like fresh juices, kale and salads every day, and then if she gets a hankering for a burger, she’ll just have a few bites. She often uses coconut oil because it helps burn fat andshe also tries to avoid alcohol.

Keep It Regular

Theron exercises regularly, averaging 4 days a week. She works with celebrity trainer Fedele De Santis.

Keep It Lean

Coming from a ballet background, Theron was already strong. She uses weights that are 5 lbs. or less to avoid getting bulky.

Keep The Heart Pumping

Theron also does a minimum of 30 minutes of cardio to keep her form slender, and to work that most important muscle: her heart.

Spin For The Win

Theron is a big fan of spin classes, doing up to 4 a week. She’ll also do power yoga twice a week.

Pilates Power

Theron swears by Pilates and says it sculpts her body like nothing else.
