Hunter-Gatherer Advocate
Born: 1977

Born in New Hampshire, Daniel Vitalis had an unsettled childhood. His father left when he was young and his mother suffered from mental health problems. In 2008, he founded the nutrition company SurThrival that has a line of natural nutritional medicines to support immunity and overall health. Vitalis hosts an internet TV series about foraging in the wild called WildFed and he also hosted a podcast called ReWild Yourself that ran for 200 episodes before ending in 2017. He created the website FindASpring.com, a resource to help the public locate clean, fresh, wild water. He has tens of thousands of followers on social media and is considered to be an influencer. He is a registered Maine guide, which is where he lives with his wife.

Daniel Vitalis’s Diet

Summary

As a teen, Vitalis became a vegetarian, and then he moved on to raw veganism for about a decade. After reading a book about how meat is essential for health, he switched his diet again and calls himself a conscious omnivore. He eats from the 4 kingdoms: animal, plant, fungal and bacterial. He hunts and gathers virtually all of his food, including things like wild rice (yes, wild rice grows in Maine). He also advocates foraging for water.

Vegan Star

In his 20s, Vitalis was fairly famous as a vegan, and was regularly speaking at conferences and other events. When he switched back to eating meat, it more or less ended his speaking engagements.

\

Who Needs Starbucks?

Vitalis likes yaupon tea, the only type of caffeinated plant that grows in North America.

\

Taking Foraging to the Next Level

Vitalis found a mentor in botanist Arthur Haines who runs a primitive life-focused organization in Maine. Haines was the first guest on Vitalis’ ReWild Yourself podcast.

\

Relearning How to Be Primitive

Vitalis discovered that learning to hunt when you’re not born into that lifestyle is actually quite challenging. His WildFed series is a practical guide for those people who are interested in knowing where their food comes from.

Daniel Vitalis’s Lifestyle

The Bed for the Discriminating Hunter-Gatherer

Vitalis endorses the Samina bed which is made in Germany from organic fibers, natural tree latex and silver mesh. It plugs in so you get an electrical signal ‘from the earth,’ and it also has magnets orienting your head toward North, no matter which direction your bed actually faces. Warning: it doesn’t come cheap.

Nature Deficit Disorder

Vitalis advocates everyone getting out in nature more, to reconnect and recharge our physical, emotional and spiritual well-being.

Successful Self-Dentistry

Vitalis says teeth and gums are living things, and that you can regenerate yours and improve oral health by using natural cleansers like coconut oil and activated charcoal. Same goes for your eyes (although it doesn’t involve coconut oil).

Wild Beauty

Vitalis says most skincare and beauty products are laden with toxic ingredients that are detrimental to our health and environment. For anyone who wants to look good while staying natural, Vitalis recommends starting from within with the microbiome in your gut.

‘I get that. But there needs to be somebody who gathers this into the modern world, and I care more about getting this message to soccer moms than I do about living in a teepee.’
