Carrie Underwood’s Diet

Summary

Underwood admits to some less than healthy habits in her youth, including starving herself, rabidly avoiding carbs and taking the now-banned diet drug Ephedra. These days, she follows a vegan diet, or as she says a ‘wannabe vegan’ because she does eat eggs from the chickens on her Nashville farm. She stopped eating meat at age 13 because the idea of eating one of her own animals was too upsetting to her. She measures her macros and gets about half of her calories from wholesome carbs such as vegetables, green smoothies and pasta. The other half is split between healthy fats such as avocados and plant-based protein such as soy. She drinks a lot of water each day.

Carrie Underwood’s Fitness Routine

Weekly Routine

Always Active

Underwood played softball and basketball and was a cheerleader in high school. She plays in the charity City of Hope Celebrity Softball tournament in Nashville for many years.

A Balanced Approach

When Underwood was younger, she mainly did cardio, but she has since added strength training to get into even better shape.

There’s An App for That

In addition to her fitness book, Underwood also launched an app called Fit52 which allows users to train alongside her and her trainer.

Push Through

Underwood says even though she doesn’t always feel excited about working out, she’ll still squeeze in something, such as a half-hour on the elliptical.

Tips & Tricks to Motivate

One thing that motivates Underwood is wearing stylish workout clothes, like the ones she designed. Her other go-to is, no surprise, listening to music. But she doesn’t listen to her own (ever). She prefers rock to help her forget she’d rather be elsewhere.

Daily Dose

Underwood trains at least 6 days a week for up to 2 hours at a clip. She usually works out in the late morning, after the kids go to school or play group, and she’ll do a mix of cardio, circuits and weight training.

Get the Blood Flowing

Underwood’s warm-ups are usually some form of cardio. She likes to run, but she also incorporates cardio into her circuits to crank up the fat-burning.

Weight Train for the Win

Part of Underwood’s daily routine is weight training. She focuses more on her lower half, and likes to look toned but not bulky.

It’s In the Cards

Underwood makes up new routines every day using a deck of cards. She assigns different exercises to different suits, then does the reps on the cards.

In It Together

Underwood and hubby work out together when they can. One will hit the treadmill while the other does something like 50 push-ups. The motivation to finish is to not torture one another.

Underwood on Getting Her Body Back After Pregnancy #2

‘It was frustrating…but I’m 4 years older. That also helped me shift my mindset. I’m still working hard…but cutting myself slack and just thinking, “Be kind to yourself.”’

{

Underwood on Working Out at Home

‘I have a gym at home with a treadmill, an elliptical, a cable machine and free weights, plus a bunch of my husband Mike’s other equipment.’

{

Underwood on Feeling Uninspired

‘There are some days that I’m not feeling it, but even then I just try to do something.’

{

Underwood on Her Exercise Routine

‘Depending on the day, I try to spend 10-15 minutes warming up, then a solid hour working out.’

{

Underwood On Working Out With Her Husband

‘We don’t talk a lot. We just get in the zone and get it done.’

Carrie Underwood’s Supplements

Besides her vegan protein, Underwood hasn’t shared much about her supplement choices. So, below are supplements that can benefit anyone following a similar diet.

Protein Powder

Vegan Protein

Underwood may eat a lot of veggies but she still takes care to get her energy-boosting, craving-curbing protein. The No Cow Bars she goes for are gluten-free, dairy-free, low-carb, kosher, naturally sweetened and keto-friendly.

vitamin B12

vitamin B12

Underwood subscribes to the tenet of ‘food as medicine’ but vegans need to take special care to get certain nutrients, like vitamin B12 which is important for the nervous system, and transporting oxygen in the body.

Vitamin D

vitamin D

Many people including vegans run low in vitamin D, which is crucial for strong bones and muscles.

Get it here

Calcium

Likewise, it can be difficult to obtain enough calcium if you do not eat dairy products. Besides strong bones and teeth, calcium is also important for heart health and nerve function.

Omega 3 Fish Oil

Vegan omega-3s

Long-chain omega-3 fatty acids are essential for brain health and to tame inflammation which can lead to health issues. Vegan omega-3s are available from algae.

Iodine

Iodine

Iodine is also crucial for proper thyroid function and metabolism. Vegans are especially at risk for low levels.

Iron

While many plants contain iron, it is often in a form that is difficult to absorb, making supplementing a good idea because deficiency can lead to anemia.

Get it here

Zinc

Few plants contain high levels of zinc and vegans may run low in this essential mineral which can lead to delayed wound healing, diarrhea, and hair loss as well as developmental issues.

‘Sometimes that mountain you’ve been climbing is just a grain of sand.’

{

Underwood on Stardom

‘Successful people have a social responsibility to make the world a better place and not just take from it.’
