Sleep is essential for our health and well-being; however, it’s often put on the back burner when we are busy or have other things going on in our life that require our more immediate attention. Because of this, many people have started looking for non-medicated sleep aids to alleviate the constant exhaustion that comes with a fast-paced lifestyle, such as BiOptimizers Magnesium Breakthrough. But does this supplement improve our sleep, or does it play on the placebo effect?

Let’s find out in this Magnesium Breakthrough review!

Magnesium Breakthrough Benefits

BiOptimizers claims their Magnesium Breakthrough supplement can help you fall asleep faster and deeper. They state the powder of this supplement comes from the 7 different forms of magnesium: magnesium chelate, citrate, bisglycinate, malate, sucrosomial, taurate, and orotate. BiOptimizers claims these 7 forms of magnesium in their supplement upgrade virtually every function in your body. This product also claims to provide benefits for immunity and bone health.

Magnesium Breakthrough Ingredients

BiOptimizers Magnesium Breakthrough contains 7 different forms of magnesium: magnesium chelate, citrate, bisglycinate, malate, sucrosomial, taurate, and orotate.

Magnesium Chelate

Magnesium chelate is an easily-absorbed form of magnesium that is often used to boost your body’s overall magnesium levels. Chelated forms of magnesium are bound to an organic molecule, like an amino acid, that allows for improved absorption however, other forms, such as magnesium citrate often have better bioavailability than chelated forms.

Magnesium Citrate

This form of magnesium is one of the most common supplement forms because it is one of the most bioavailable. Magnesium citrate is bound with citric acid, a compound found in citrus fruits that gives them their tart flavor.

It is often used to treat magnesium deficiency because it is easily absorbed by our digestive system however, it is also sometimes used to treat constipation as higher doses can have a laxative effect.

Some small studies have suggested that magnesium citrate can help to provide calming benefits that may help with treating anxiety and depression symptoms. However, further research is warranted as studies are limited.

Magnesium Bisglycinate

Most often referred to as magnesium glycinate, this form of magnesium is bound by the amino acid glycine. Glycine is a non-essential amino acid that is also associated with benefits for sleep. It is easily digested and believed to contain calming properties that may help with anxiety, depression, stress, and insomnia symptoms. However, research on this is also limited and more studies are needed.

Magnesium Malate

Like magnesium citrate, magnesium malate is bound to malic acid, a compound found in fruits such as apples, grapes, and cherries. This form of magnesium is also easily absorbed by our digestive system and is often used to treat magnesium deficiency. Magnesium malate is considered gentle on your stomach compared to other forms of magnesium and may also be used to treat constipation.

Magnesium Sucrosomial

Sucrosomial magnesium is magnesium that has been encased in a sucrose ester to help improve the absorption rate. Some studies have found that sucrosomial magnesium can help to aid in the bioavailability of magnesium in the body, but further studies are still needed on this.

Magnesium Taurate

Magnesium taurate is magnesium that is bound with the amino acid taurine. Research suggests that this combination can help to improve blood sugar and support healthy blood pressure. Unfortunately, studies on this are limited and further research is still needed to back these claims.

Magnesium Orotate

This form of magnesium is bound to orotic acid. It lacks the strong laxative effects of other forms of magnesium which make it ideal for those who wish to avoid those potential side effects. It is a popular magnesium supplement for athletes and some research shows it may be beneficial for those with heart problems however there is not enough research available on this at this time. This form of magnesium is also considerably more expensive than other forms.

Does Magnesium Breakthrough Work?

Because BiOptimizers Magnesium Breakthrough contains several different forms of magnesium, it is likely to provide benefits to those who are lacking sufficient magnesium in their diet. Although not all forms of magnesium provided have adequate research to back up certain claims, such as improvement in stress or anxiety symptoms, magnesium is best known for its ability to improve sleep in those who aren’t getting adequate amounts through diet. Research on this is still sparse however, it is more promising and abundant than magnesium as a treatment for other conditions.

With that said, those who don’t get adequate magnesium through diet alone will likely notice an improvement in their sleep, but the impact will vary from person to person. Those who do get good amounts of magnesium in their diet may not notice a significant difference at all. Because the price of this product is higher compared to other magnesium supplements, it is not likely worth the cost unless you struggle with a magnesium deficiency and even then, there are likely better, lower-cost options available.

How Does Magnesium Breakthrough Compare?

When comparing BiOptimizers Magnesium Breakthrough to other supplements of its kind, such as Purely Optimal Magnesium Complex, one of the biggest differences between the two is the price point. Magnesium Breakthrough contains 7 different forms of magnesium to help increase bioavailability. Purely Optimal Magnesium Complex contains 6 types with a 120-serving container costing only $20.

Although there aren’t many magnesium supplements available that contain more than 3 forms of magnesium, the ones available appear to be priced similarly to Purely Optimal with many of the same ingredients and doses. Both products contain 500mg of total magnesium from all the different forms provided.

Who is Magnesium Breakthrough Best For?

This product would be best for someone healthy, who does not have any chronic conditions and is not taking any medications, who struggles with getting adequate magnesium in their diet, and who are looking to improve their sleep. Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant should avoid taking this product.

Use caution if you have been diagnosed or are being treated for diabetes, gastrointestinal conditions, kidney disease, or heart disease. Always speak to your doctor or healthcare provider before adding a supplement to your routine.

Claims vs. Reality

Based on the research available, magnesium may help improve sleep quality and time to fall asleep however, the research on this is still lacking. BiOptimizers Magnesium Breakthrough supplement claims to improve how quickly you fall asleep and increase the amount of deep sleep you get.

Based on the research, this is a safe claim to make however it will most likely benefit those healthy individuals who may not be getting adequate magnesium through diet. Although this may be a better option for many instead of taking medication, there can be safety concerns for people who struggle with certain conditions.

Other claims, such as improving stress and upgrading every function in your body are not based on adequate research and are misleading to consumers. These claims should be taken with a grain of salt.

Magnesium is an essential mineral your body uses for tons of different necessary functions. If you are deficient in this mineral, taking a supplement will provide great benefits to your health but an improvement in every body function is a bit of a stretch.

Is Magnesium Breakthrough Safe?

Magnesium supplements are generally considered safe for the average healthy adult.

Most side effects of taking magnesium supplements are limited to gastrointestinal, including upset stomach, nausea, and diarrhea.

Some antacids can make it more difficult to absorb certain forms of magnesium, specifically chelated magnesium, and should be avoided or limited if possible. Those with certain conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, and gastrointestinal diseases, should avoid taking magnesium supplements unless strictly under a doctor’s supervision.

Always talk to your doctor or healthcare provider before adding a supplement to your routine, especially if you are taking medications or other supplements that may interact.
