Collagen and adaptogenic mushrooms are among the hottest supplements on the market right now. If you haven’t personally taken either one of these supplements, you likely know someone who has. 

Naturally, supplement companies have become keen on this and began combining the two popular products, such as BiOptimizers CollaGenius collagen and concentrated raw mushroom powder. With claims ranging from glowing hair, skin, and nails, to immune and brain-boosting benefits, it seems too good to be true.

Is this powerful combination all it’s cracked up to be or is it simply a marketing strategy? Let’s find out in this CollaGenius review!

Their 5-superfood blend provides ingredients such as lion’s mane, which boosts brain-derived neurotropic factor (BDNF) for improved memory, and chaga for antioxidant and immune system support along with promoting healthy blood sugar and cholesterol control. It also includes cordyceps for improved exercise performance and anti-aging benefits along with collagen to boost muscle mass and strengthen hair, skin, and nails. 

BiOptimizers claims their CollaGenius powder provides instant wakefulness, smooth sustained energy, radical neurogenesis, faster thought processing, improved memory, a rich vitamin profile, and radiant hair, skin, and nails.

As mentioned above, BiOptimizers CollaGenius touts a 5-superfood blend that includes collagen, lion’s mane, cordyceps, reishi, and chaga mushrooms.

Collagen

Supplemental collagen contains a good number of research studies that support benefits ranging from joint health to stronger and healthier hair, skin, and nails. 

Our body produces collagen however, production decreases as we age which can cause a loss of integrity to our skin and joint tissues. The result is dry, winkle-prone skin and an increased risk for degenerative joint disorders such as osteoarthritis. 

Supplemental collagen can help to boost the hydration and elasticity of the skin which reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It can also stimulate collagen production and decrease inflammation in your joints leading to less pain and discomfort.

Collagen supplementation is also believed to help with preventing bone loss, boosting muscle mass, and promoting heart health. Although collagen can be found in food sources, research has not found consuming collagen-rich foods to be associated with the same benefits as taking a collagen supplement. 

Mushrooms

The mushrooms in CollaGenius (lion’s mane, chaga, cordyceps, and reishi) are popular adaptogens believed to provide health benefits including increasing the body’s resistance to stress, reducing inflammation, and increasing BDNF among many other perceived benefits.

Although a lot of the research available on these adaptogenic fungi is promising, most studies are conducted on animals and human trials are lacking. Further research utilizing human trials is needed to explore the safety and efficacy of adaptogenic mushrooms as supplements before these benefits can be proven.

Does CollaGenius Work?

Based on the ingredients and subsequent research available, BiOptimizers CollaGenius likely will provide some noticeable benefits to certain populations, mainly regarding its collagen content. 

Some of BiOptimizers consumers reported noticing an energy boost, being more aware of their surroundings, clearer head, relief in knee pain, and more. Although not all the results mentioned are guaranteed and research does not fully support the use of these products for these purposes yet. As with any supplement, individual results may vary.

Who is CollaGenius Best For?

This product is best for healthy adults looking to boost their immunity and improve their skin health who are not taking any medications or suffering from chronic conditions. Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant should avoid taking this product as well as those who have fish or shellfish allergies.

Claims vs. Reality

Based on the available research, some, but not all, of these claims are justified.

Many research studies support collagen and its benefits for radiant hair, skin, and nails when taken as a supplement but more research is underway regarding collagen and its role as a health supplement. This product does not disclose vitamin and mineral content from its ingredients therefore it’s difficult to say if it contains a rich vitamin profile. 

Although research is promising on some of the benefits of the mushroom powder in CollaGenius, specifically improved memory and neurogenesis, human trials are lacking, and research is mainly composed of animal studies. Further research is still needed before these claims can be proven.

Is CollaGenius Safe?

Supplemental collagen has little known side effects and is considered safe for most healthy adults. Some may experience bloating, heartburn, and uncomfortable feelings of fullness when taking collagen. Collagen powders also may contain allergens, such as fish, shellfish, and eggs so it’s important to always read the label to avoid any potential interactions if a food allergy is present.

Lion’s mane, reishi, cordyceps, and chaga mushrooms are considered safe for most healthy adults however, some may experience side effects from taking these products. For example, reishi mushrooms can cause dizziness and headaches in some and should be avoided by those taking blood pressure-lowering medications. 

Although these mushrooms are considered safe when taken alone, there is limited research on their effects when taken together. Combination supplements such as this can increase the risk of medication interactions and allergic reactions. Always speak to your doctor or healthcare provider before taking this supplement, especially if you are taking any medications for a chronic condition.
