Citrulline Malate

Up first is citrulline malate, which is found in many pre-workouts. It is able to increase levels of arginine and nitric oxide, which leads to improved blood flow to the muscles. This can not only help you get a better pump, but it can enhance exercise performance too.

Most research shows that around 8 grams can improve muscle endurance and reduce fatigue. 

Beta-Alanine

Next is another popular ingredient in beta-alanine. Beta-alanine is able to increase carnosine concentrations in the muscles, which ultimately leads to enhanced strength, power, and muscle endurance. 

Beta-alanine can also reduce lactate build-up, which can allow the muscles to work harder for longer. 

Generally, 4 to 6 grams is best. 

Betaine Anhydrous

Intensive Pre-Train also included betaine anhydrous, which is primarily used for exercise due to its action as an osmolyte. 

Basically, it helps the muscle cells to retain water and thus stay more hydrated throughout the workout, which makes it effective against muscular fatigue and for promoting greater muscle endurance. However, some research shows no benefits of betaine on strength and power. 

The studies that have shown benefits generally use 2.5g. 

Glycerol Monostearate

Very similar to betaine is glycerol which also can increase cellular hydration. Plus, it can act as an energy substrate. Together, these effects make glycerol effective for improving athletic performance and physical endurance while reducing fatigue. 

However, you typically need a high dose (10g or more) to notice major benefits. 

L-Arginine AKG

Next is arginine AKG (alpha-ketoglutarate), which is a specific form of this amino acid. Arginine acts as a vasodilator, which increases blood flow to the muscles, but research shows it isn’t as effective as citrulline for this purpose. However, when combined with citrulline, it may be more effective. 

The dose should be around 4 grams.

L-Tyrosine

Another amino acid included in Intensive Pre-Train is tyrosine. The main reason it’s included is because it can increase dopamine and norepinephrine levels, which may improve mood, drive, and motivation. 

And it is particularly useful when these neurotransmitters are depleted from stressful situations, so people who exercise very intensely may benefit, especially endurance exercisers.

Taurine

Up next is taurine, which is an amino acid that’s abundant in skeletal muscle. It plays a role in energy metabolism, among other things, which is why it can be beneficial for exercise performance. 

Research shows that taurine supplementation can improve strength, power, muscle endurance, aerobic endurance, recovery, and other aspects. 

Generally, 3 to 5 grams is used, with up to 10 grams sometimes. 

Glucuronolactone

Another ingredient is glucuronolactone, which is often included in energy drinks, although there is really little evidence showing it has benefits for exercise performance. 

The only studies show that it is beneficial when combined with many other ingredients, so it’s unclear what specific benefits glucuronolactone may have. 

L-Phenylalanine

Intensive Pre-Train also has phenylalanine, yet another amino acid. Research shows it can increase fat-burning during exercise, but it actually may have deleterious effects for high-intensity exercise performance. Much more research is needed. 

Caffeine

Unsurprisingly, caffeine is included (but not in the green apple flavor). It is the most well-known central nervous system stimulant and increases numerous neurotransmitters in the body while also decreasing perceived pain and fatigue and improving mood, alertness, and focus. 

Plus, caffeine can increase many aspects of athletic performance, such as endurance, strength, muscle endurance, power, and time to exhaustion. Its benefits for aerobic and endurance activities appear to be the most powerful. 

Generally, you’re going to want 200 to 400mg. 

KSM-66 Ashwagandha

One unique ingredient in Intensive Pre-Train is KSM 66 ashwagandha, which is a trademarked form of this potent adaptogen. It basically helps the body to normalize the stress response, which can lead to many physical and mental health benefits. 

Related to working out, ashwagandha can improve strength, power, endurance, recovery, and fatigue, making it a very solid workout ingredient. 

The dosage range typically used is 300 to 600mg. 

En-Xtra

Another trademarked ingredient is En-Xtra, which is a form of Alpinia galanga rhizome extract. Research shows that, by itself or when paired with caffeine, it can increase levels of alertness yet calmness and focus too. This is a very new product, and initial research used 300mg. 

BioPerine

Finally, there is BioPerine, which is a form of black pepper extract. Basically, BioPerine acts as a nutrient absorption enhancer so you can get more out of all of the other ingredients for their full effectiveness. 

Vitamins and Minerals

Finally, Intensive Pre-Train contains various vitamins and minerals: B-complex vitamins, iron, and vitamin C. These aren’t really main players, but the B-complex vitamins should help provide extra energy and possibly focus; iron may help enhance blood flow; and vitamin C can help improve recovery from exercise due to its anti-inflammatory effects. So, these ingredients help to round out the other more potent ones. 

Does Crazy Nutrition Intensive Pre-Train Work?

Crazy Nutrition Intensive Pre-Train should be an effective pre-workout overall. It contains a number of well-researched and science-backed ingredients designed to increase energy, strength, endurance, power, focus, and alertness, among other things.

Yet, most of the ingredients aren’t dosed high enough (besides ashwagandha and caffeine), so this limits its potential effectiveness.

With that being said, due to having many “overlapping” ingredients in terms of the effects they have, this shouldn’t be too much of a concern. 

Overall, what you’re getting is a pre-workout that could be a little better if it had better dosages, but a pretty high-quality product nonetheless. 

Claims vs. Reality

Crazy Nutrition doesn’t make any outlandish claims for Intensive Pre-Train, so it’s pretty likely that you’ll experience the benefits they suggest. After all, you should get a boost in energy and drive, particularly from caffeine and En-Xtra, but also tyrosine and even ashwagandha. 

You’ll also likely see slight improvements in focus thanks to tyrosine plus the caffeine and En-Xtra combo. But I wouldn’t expect anything major here. 

One of the most important things is actual workout performance, and you should see improvements here since Crazy Nutrition Intensive Pre-Train has betaine, beta-alanine, citrulline, caffeine, and many other powerhouse pre-workout ingredients. In practice, I’d expect you to be able to grind out a couple more reps, lift a little more weight, or run a little further than you’d otherwise be able to. Nothing superhuman-like, but still progress. 

Finally, the combination of glycerol, citrulline, and arginine should give you some pretty nice pumps and allow you to work out harder, for longer. Your biceps won’t bulge up to 20 inches, but they should become a little bit fuller and stronger. 

In sum, as a natural pre-workout, these are some pretty solid benefits; nothing insane, but no truly natural pre-workout ever is.
