Bruce Lipton grew up in a suburb of New York City. He holds a PhD a developmental biology and taught anatomy at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine for a decade and at St. George’s University for 3 years. He also worked as a researcher at Penn State and Stanford University. He now focuses his research on epigenetics, which is the study of the changes in the way genes function without the DNA itself changing. He believes that the way cells function proves the existence of God. Lipton has taught in chiropractic schools and other alternative schools since the 1990s. He has written 3 books on the topic of epigenetics, and in 2009 he won the Goi Peace Award. Lipton has appeared on hundreds of TV and radio shows and is a popular speaker in the US and around the world. His views are not considered credible by mainstream science but he has hundreds of thousands of followers on social media.

For Lipton, everything begins in the mind, but that doesn’t mean that making dietary changes can’t improve your health. He cites research done by Dr. Dean Ornish on men with low-risk prostate cancer who followed a diet rich in plant products, along with moderate exercise and stress-management techniques including meditation for 3 months. Not only did they lose weight and improve other health markers, they saw changes in about 500 genes. Lipton says to not blame your genetics for your problems, and that you have the power to improve your health.

Change Your Beliefs, Change Your Body
Lipton is a strong proponent of the power of belief to change virtually any aspect of your life. If you believe that you are destined to be fat, you will be. But if you believe you are meant to be healthy, that will also be true.
The Biology of Belief
Lipton says many of the physiological functions of the body including heart rate were once believed to be involuntary, but this has been disproven. With enough concentrated effort, he says you can control almost everything in your body, including blood pressure, pain, and metabolism.

Lipton says you are not at the mercy of your genes, but rather it is your mind that controls how your genes behave. It is your perception of your environment that matters, and that is under your control.
