Sean O’Malley’s Lifestyle

Best Sleeper in the UFC

O’Malley may come across as a goofball, but he is extremely disciplined when it comes to training. He goes to bed no later than 10 pm and wakes around 7:30 am without an alarm. He says sleep is the most important thing he does for his fitness.

Sleep Hacks

O’Malley does everything he can to promote high-quality sleep, from blue-blocking glasses to not eating late to cutting out caffeine. He also tracks his sleep, and often gets 3+ hours of deep sleep per night, which is a lot. He also does a 20 minute meditation/nap 3-4 times a week.

Good Advice

O’Malley was not exactly a star student. He dropped out of high school in sophomore year. He says a teacher told him to change his name and get out of town, which is more or less exactly what he did.

Alter Ego

O’Malley earned the nickname of ‘Suga’ early on because his first coach said he was ‘just so sweet to watch.’

Depression Struggles

O’Malley was suspended from fighting for 2 years for testing positive for the banned substance ostarine. It was found that his use was not intentional, but being forced out of competition for an extended period took a toll on his mental health.

Rise to the Top

O’Malley moved to Arizona in 2014 and started training with fellow Montanan, Tim Welch. The two even shared an apartment. Just 3 years later, O’Malley made it to the big time.

Duty Calls

O’Malley loves to game (current fave: Call of Duty), but he doesn’t let it interfere with his sleep. He plays every day, and streams his gaming as another source of income, and he also likes having fans watch.

Open Mind Set

O’Malley says that his goal is to be the greatest fighter of all time. Once he reaches that goal, he might switch gears.

O’Malley on sleep

‘I have the best sleep in the UFC…Sleep is the #1 performance-enhancer in anything.’
